Requirements
  • A Master's degree in a STEM field, such as Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or Mathematics.
  • Five years of professional experience focused on writing, editing, and formatting academic materials.
  • Strong command of the English language, including grammar and writing skills.
  • Proven experience in technical writing or editing.
  • Familiarity with style guides such as APA, IEEE, and Chicago.
  • Proficiency with editing tools and software such as Microsoft Word, LaTeX, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Strong understanding of academic writing conventions and research methodologies.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work with complex technical information.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Experience with content management systems and document collaboration tools.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, colleagues, and visitors.
  • Candidates must submit a resume, cover letter, and a sample of edited academic work.
Responsibilities
  • Develop relationships with faculty members and program directors to establish approaches for meeting students' writing needs.
  • Support students, including students not writing in their native language, in improving academic writing at the master's and doctoral levels for qualitative and quantitative research studies.
  • Meet with graduate administration to ensure writing styles and corrections align with Graduate School writing guidelines.
  • Organize writing assignments according to established conciseness, style, and terminology guidelines.
  • Maintain a project log of documents, records, and files for the Graduate Resource Center.
  • Review and edit technical documents for clarity, grammar, punctuation, and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Ensure accuracy and consistency in terminology and data presented.
  • Verify factual information and check logical flow and coherence in content.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure technical accuracy.
  • Cross-reference and validate data, calculations, and experimental results.
  • Apply formatting and style guidelines such as APA, IEEE, and Chicago.
  • Standardize headings, tables, figures, and references according to applicable guidelines.
  • Assist in developing and structuring technical content for clarity and readability.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students and faculty to improve their writing skills.
  • Manage multiple editing projects simultaneously and deliver edited materials on schedule.
  • Coordinate with students, faculty, and other stakeholders to meet deadlines.
  • Conduct final document reviews to ensure quality standards are met before publication.
  • Implement and maintain best practices for technical editing and documentation.
  • Work with interdisciplinary teams including scientists, engineers, and IT professionals.
  • Participate in meetings and discussions to understand project requirements and objectives.
  • Deliver graduate student writing services and resources, including writing workshops and dissertation editing services.
  • Stay current with best practices in graduate education and student services.
  • Attend relevant conferences, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Network with professionals in the field to exchange ideas and resources.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience in academic editing or publishing is preferred.
  • Experience with reference management tools such as EndNote or Zotero is a plus.
  • A terminal degree (PhD) is preferred.
