Requirements
- Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required registered nurse credential.
- Have twelve months of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
- Hold Texas State Registered Nurse licensure through the Texas Board of Nursing or compact licensure; obtain a permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
- Hold Basic Life Support certification or instructor status from the American Heart Association.
- Obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification or instructor status from the American Heart Association within four months.
- Demonstrate the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job through ongoing skills and competency assessments.
- Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential job functions, especially those affecting patient or employee safety or security.
- Effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers.
- Demonstrate strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
- Function independently and exercise judgment when interacting with physicians, the interprofessional care team, patients, and families.
- Use critical-thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
- Demonstrate proficient time-management skills.

Responsibilities
- Provide professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, including patients with varied and complex needs.
- Conduct nursing assessments, assist with examinations and treatment, provide patient education, and maintain medical records.
- Communicate and collaborate with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to coordinate compassionate, efficient, quality care and achieve treatment outcomes.
- Use technology, administer medications, perform procedures, and manage emergencies while providing direct patient care.
- Act as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.
- Participate in or lead unit and shared-governance initiatives.
- Serve as a charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees when assigned.
- Contribute to service-line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.
- Use therapeutic communication, including active listening and teaching, to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team and collaborate on plans of care.
- Contribute to teamwork by monitoring overall unit acuity, offering assistance, responding to requests for assistance, and seeking or providing guidance to the interprofessional healthcare team.
- Implement staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes and coach and mentor other staff and students, including through preceptorship when applicable.
- Follow patient- and family-centered care standards and practice in accordance with cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
- Develop, update, and communicate plans of care, including discharge plans, in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team using the nursing process.
- Prioritize care according to patients’ needs, abilities, and preferences.
- Advocate for patients and families by identifying and resolving clinical and ethical concerns with appropriate resources.
- Provide patient teaching based on learning needs, use appropriate resources, and plan for care after discharge.
- Evaluate patient comprehension and adapt teaching methods accordingly.
- Improve patient-satisfaction scores through peer-to-peer accountability to service standards.
- Follow standards of care related to the nursing process and regulatory requirements and professional practice.
- Identify practice-improvement opportunities using research-based evidence to achieve core-measure and patient-safety outcomes, supported by accurate documentation.
- Provide and modify care for complex patients and coordinate care with the interprofessional team based on patient-condition evaluations and accurate documentation.
- Use clinical judgment and an evidence-based analytical approach.
- Improve quality and safety scores by reporting near misses and collaborating with the interprofessional healthcare team.
- Manage time, document care promptly, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks.
- Provide input into unit resource utilization, including capital and operational budget needs.
- Contribute to department financial targets by decreasing length of stay and optimizing efficiency.
- Identify and present opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in patient care or unit operations using evidence-based practice literature.
- Offer innovative solutions through evidence-based practice, performance-improvement projects, and shared-governance activities.
- Champion new care pathways or service-line implementation and identify trends supporting practice changes.
- Research changes and present options to shared governance and leadership.
- Wear required scrubs.
- Participate in on-call coverage during emergencies when required.
- Work the assigned night shift.
