Detecting Implants in Their Brains

Detecting implants in their brains. A San Francisco startup with ties to Elon Musk's Neuralink has started testing its brain implant to detect and treat cancer in humans. Coherence Neuro says it temporarily placed its coin-sized implant in the brains of three people undergoing surgery to have brain tumors removed at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia. The implant was in place for roughly 30 minutes before being removed, providing an important safety check before the device can be implanted long-term in patients with brain cancer. Known as a brain-computer interface, the Coherence Neuro device is designed to sense the unique electrical signals of tumors and deliver mild electrical stimulation to prevent their growth. In the time the implant was in the patients' brains, the company was able to see how it performed for a short period. (The patients had consented prior to surgery.) Matthew MacDougall, Neuralink's head neurosurgeon, is an adviser and investor in Coherence. Rory Murphy, a neurosurgeon at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona who is an investigator in one of Neuralink's trials, is also slated to be involved in future trials of the Coherence device. The idea behind treating brain tumors with electrical stimulation comes from the long-held observation that cancerous tissue has distinctive electrical properties. "These are electrical conditions, just like epilepsy, just like depression. This is a network problem in the brain," says Ben Woodington, chief executive officer and cofounder of Coherence. In 2019, researchers at Stanford University found that a group of aggressive brain tumors called high-grade gliomas drive their own growth by forming synapses with healthy neurons. In that study, researchers showed that giving a seizure drug to mice successfully interrupted electrical signals to tumors and slowed their growth. Applying low-intensity electricity has also been shown to disrupt cancer cell division in brain tumors. A wearable device called Optune, developed by Novocure, was first approved in 2011 to treat adults with glioblastoma, which makes up about half of cancerous brain tumors. Earlier this year, the company received regulatory approval to treat pancreatic cancer with its device, which is attached to either the scalp or stomach with adhesive patches depending on the type of cancer. The Optune device can improve survival by several months if it's worn for most of the day, but people have to shave their heads to use it and carry a battery around in a backpack or on a hip belt. Coherence wants to deliver electrical stimulation in a more convenient way. Its implant sits in the skull and has 16 extending threads that extend into the brain tissue. It's designed to be implanted during a brain tumor resection surgery, when a tumor is removed. Even when tumors can be fully removed, it's common for them to come back after surgery, something Coherence's device is designed to protect against. The company is initially aiming to treat glioblastoma, which has a higher risk of coming back compared to lower-grade tumors. Glioblastoma patients have few options and a grim prognosis. Most patients live for just 15 to 18 months after being diagnosed, with a five-year survival rate of less than 10 percent. Right now, glioblastoma patients get an MRI of their brain every two to three months so doctors can monitor tumor growth and tweak their drug regimen as needed. But Woodington doesn't think that's frequent enough. Brain tumors can suddenly become more aggressive, and clinicians don't have a good idea of what's going on between scans. The Coherence device is designed to monitor people continuously and deliver customized electrical stimulation. A connected app will let patients log their symptoms, which get sent to clinicians along with their disease state and the amount of stimulation they're receiving. Doctors can fine-tune the therapy remotely or let the device do so automatically. And by detecting rapid tumor growth, the device could signal to doctors when to intervene with surgery before an MRI could. The company plans to begin a trial next year in glioblastoma patients in which they will have the device permanently implanted.

CorTec's BCI technology secures 'world-first' designation covering stroke rehabilitation. 9 April 2026 CorTec announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted a Breakthrough Device designation for the company's novel brain-computer interface (BCI) technology - the Brain Interchange system. This designation covers the use of direct cortical electrical stimulation to support motor recovery in people living with chronic stroke-related impairments. "Only a few BCI companies worldwide - including Neuralink, Synchron and Blackrock Neurotech - have received Breakthrough Device designation to date," said CorTec chief executive officer (CEO) Frank Desiere. "Achieving this designation is a defining milestone for CorTec and underscores the potential of our Brain Interchange system to address the significant unmet need in stroke rehabilitation. Together with promising initial results from our first-in-human study [...] as well as additional long-term data published in Nature Scientific Data demonstrating signal stability over 500 days, this designation provides strong momentum as we advance toward larger clinical trials. We believe CorTec occupies a unique position in the global BCI landscape, combining a fully implantable, bidirectional closed-loop platform with a therapeutic approach focused on restoring motor function after stroke." CorTec details that its Brain Interchange system combines neural signal recording with adaptive stimulation in a closed-loop system. The platform is currently being evaluated in a US FDA-approved investigational device exemption (IDE) study at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, marking "the first clinical investigation of a fully implantable, wireless BCI system for stroke rehabilitation in humans", the company also claims. In a press release, CorTec further states that its approach represents a "distinct direction" within the global BCI field - adding that, while a number of BCI systems have received Breakthrough Device designation but are restricted to enabling patient communication by controlling digital devices via thought, the Brain Interchange platform is being developed as a fully implantable, bidirectional device, enabling brain-based communication but also therapeutic neurostimulation that may allow the restoration of motor function after stroke. At present, no other BCI company worldwide holds a US FDA Breakthrough Device designation for this indication, the release notes. "The Breakthrough Device designation enables more frequent and structured engagement with the US FDA as we advance our development programme," commented Mara Assis, head of regulatory affairs and quality management at CorTec. "Our regulatory strategy has followed a stepwise approach, from prior device clearance to IDE approval and successful human implantations. This designation will help accelerate planning of clinical trials and support the next regulatory milestones." CorTec says it is continuing to advance the Brain Interchange system as a flexible, adaptive platform with potential applications across multiple neurological conditions; in addition to the ongoing stroke rehabilitation study, the company's platform is also being evaluated for epilepsy, with further indications including paralysis and depression under development too.

Edward 'big Balls' Coristine is helping out on viral fraud videos now. The DOGE engineer appeared on influencer Nick Shirley's podcast this week to talk corruption and government work - and how they collaborated on Shirley's recent 'investigation.' Nick Shirley - the right-wing creator whose YouTube investigation sparked the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in Minnesota - claims that his most recent video about alleged fraud in California was bolstered by data provided by none other than Edward Coristine, one of the first members of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) known online as "Big Balls." Coristine, who joined DOGE at 19 years old with no prior government experience, was staffed across several agencies including the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Small Business Administration (SBA). Before joining DOGE, Coristine worked at Elon Musk's Neuralink for several months and founded a startup known for hiring black hat hackers. In an interview with Coristine published on Shirley's YouTube channel on Thursday, Shirley claims that Coristine personally pulled data on Medicaid spending for businesses based in California as potential targets. Coristine nodded along, telling Shirley that the government must create more opportunities to crowdsource fraud investigations. The information Coristine allegedly pulled for Shirley was from a dataset published by the DOGE team at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in February. In a post to X at the time, the HHS DOGE team referred to it as "the largest Medicaid dataset in department history." The post also claimed that the dataset could be used to "detect" large-scale fraud. "After that, I went to California based off that dataset you had helped me extract, and these fraudsters also weren't even trying to hide it," Shirley told Coristine in Thursday's interview. Coristine said that by open-sourcing data on government spending, vigilante investigators like Shirley who are "more well-positioned" could uncover fraudulent payments. "You are someone who actually went to the places where we were spending all this money and confronted the people and got to know the truth. I think we just have to create more opportunities for that to happen. We have to continue to open source data," Coristine said. The intersection of the right's favorite fraud influencer and one of the most notorious DOGE engineers exemplifies the next evolution of DOGE and the Trump administration's fight against "waste, fraud, and abuse." Shirley's videos have become key pieces of evidence for the Trump administration's fraud and immigration crackdowns. When Shirley released his December video claiming to have uncovered more than $100 million in Somali-run childcare fraud in Minnesota, figures like vice president JD Vance shared it. A surge of immigration agents were then sent to Minnesota, resulting in mass arrests, detainments, and the deaths of two protesters, Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Early in their YouTube video, Shirley and Coristine directly tie fraud to immigrant communities and foreigners. "A lot of the money is being stolen and siphoned out of the country," Coristine says, without providing evidence. "Once that money is in a suitcase to Somalia, that's never coming back," Shirley replies. Later in the video, Shirley and Coristine cite specific examples of "waste and fraud" identified by DOGE, including funding for a "Sesame Street style children's TV program in Iraq" and "tax policy consulting in Liberia." Both programs were supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which DOGE effectively shut down in the early months of 2025. Coristine also alleged that the SBA "did a terrible job," particularly with loans during the height of COVID, and that there were "no checks at all on who's receiving money, not even the most basic checks of like, if [a Social Security number] is real." "It's no secret that the Biden administration took an extraordinarily lax approach to underwriting and fraud prevention at the SBA," says SBA spokesperson Maggie Clemmons. (A 2025 Government Accountability Office report found that the SBA did give out loans before its full system of checks was in place.) While Coristine is no longer a formal member of DOGE, he's still working in government as head of engineering for the White House's National Design Studio (NDS), which is run by Airbnb cofounder and US chief design officer Joe Gebbia. Gebbia previously worked as a member of DOGE at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) tasked with modernizing the government's retirement system. Coristine didn't appear to believe DOGE's mission was over: "I think the cabinet secretaries... are continuing the mission and mantra of DOGE," Coristine tells Shirley. Shirley shared a number of conspiracy theories about fraud. In the interview, Shirley alleged that in California specifically, "There's a lot of dead people who are registered to vote. There's a lot of people who are dead who are still receiving Social Security." During his time in government, Musk made similar false claims around dead people continuing to receive social security benefits. Experts, however, have noted that this was likely due to DOGE members not understanding how the agency's data systems and code base are structured. This was not the first time Shirley made allegations about California's voter registration systems. On February 16, Shirley released a video claiming that he had identified voters who were 125 years old, and that he had identified 30 people who had listed a UPS store as their address. In an X post sharing the video, Shirley called California "the breeding ground for voter fraud in America." (Researchers overwhelmingly agree that there is no widespread voter fraud in California). These allegations echo a key focus of the Trump administration and its supporters. Earlier this week, the president signed an executive order mandating the creation of a national list of eligible voters. In February, speaking on the podcast of former FBI deputy director Dan Bongino, Trump asserted that undocumented immigrants were voting illegally and that Republicans "should take over the voting in at least 15 places." There is no evidence that immigrants voting illegally constitutes any significant threat to US elections. A 2017 analysis from the Brennan Center for Justice found only 30 incidents of possible noncitizen voting in 2016 out of over 23.5 million votes. Coristine revealed a handful of other strange and unreported details about the ongoing work at NDS. He mentioned that NDS's current chief creative officer is Nate Brown, who previously collaborated with Ye, formerly Kanye West, on projects like the rapper's 2021 album "Donda." Coristine also said that one of NDS's next big priorities is "freedom" and bringing "free speech to Europe." Despite failing to provide any details into what that means, Coristine said to expect more information soon. Shirley and Coristine did not immediately respond to requests for comment from WIRED.
