The Ohio State University College of Dentistry seeks a Research Assistant to join its Division of Biosciences. This is a full-time position. The Division of Biosciences is a multidisciplinary basic science unit committed to research and teaching in the broad area of the biomedical sciences. All faculty members within the Division are engaged in active research programs and are funded by a variety of organizations including the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

The Schiff lab at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry seeks a Research Assistant to carry out studies related to the neurobiology and neurocircuitry of taste preference and feeding behaviors. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented individual who is enthusiastic about joining a team-based laboratory. Experience with tissue sectioning, mouse colony maintenance, image analysis in ImageJ, animal behavioral testing, and familiarity with experimental design is preferred. This job combines laboratory management, supervision, and carrying out research protocols and experimental design independently. Lab management includes ordering supplies and equipment, maintaining a mouse colony, laboratory inventory, experimental and animal protocols and records. The individual is also responsible for ensuring compliance with laboratory safety and hygiene requirements.
Laboratory supervision includes training and organizing work schedules for undergraduate students working in the lab. Laboratory procedures include behavioral testing with mice, histology and immunohistochemistry, making solutions, and data and image analysis. The successful candidate will also be expected to interpret results of studies and independently plan follow up experiments as well as help students plan research directions. In line with this responsibility, the position will also involve communicating scientific findings at conferences and/or helping the PI with writing up results for publication.
This position is contingent upon department/grant funding, which will be evaluated annually to determine if sufficient funds remain to continue to support the position.
Work Schedule
Nominal work hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
A flexible work schedule may sometimes be needed including evenings, weekends and holidays.
Compensation
$17.31 - $22.77/hour, based on experience.
Position Requirements
The body must be able to bend, stoop, and reach I order to perform many procedures. Individuals in this position may be exposed to the following: blood borne pathogens; chemical hazards (skin irritants); equipment; animals; use of sharp instruments; and latex.
Experience and Education
Required
High School diploma or GED with with minimum of 2 year laboratory experience in a professional position including experience with lab mouse husbandry and colony maintenance. Basic skills in the Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are required.
Desired
A Bachelor’s degree in a biological/health science. Desired experience with the following: tissue sectioning and staining, electronics, data analysis in R, matlab, Python, Igor or equivalent, image analysis in ImageJ, Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.
