Munich Electrification unveils HV Disconnector between battery and vehicle. Munich Electrification presents an innovative battery disconnect device for high-voltage systems in commercial vehicles at the IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany. Unlike the currently used mechanical or pyrotechnic fuses, the Munich-based company's solution is based on a chip circuit. By Cora Werwitzke 29.08.2026 - 13:00 From 15 to 20 September 2026, Munich Electrification will showcase its Solid-State Relay (ME SSR) at the IAA Transportation exhibition. This component is a semiconductor-based battery disconnector designed to connect the battery to the powertrain in electric commercial vehicles to safely isolate both systems when required. For instance, this includes when the vehicle is parked, during maintenance, or in the event of a fault. The German battery technology specialist explains that the ME SSR replaces conventional disconnection methods, such as mechanical contactors and pyrotechnic fuses, with a semiconductor circuit. This circuit is specifically engineered for the switching cycles, vibrations, and continuous loads typical in commercial vehicle operations. Munich Electrification notes that this innovation has been developed to address the frustration that fleet operators were experiencing because of the limitations of mechanical contactors. These wear out under high switching cycles, as do pyrotechnic fuses, which are single-use components. "In commercial vehicles, uptime dictates the profitability of the entire vehicle. Mechanical contactors wear out, and pyrotechnic fuses only trigger once - every failure means repairs and downtime. The ME SSR switches purely electronically: wear-free, in under five microseconds, and resettable after every fault. This keeps the vehicle in operation instead of in the workshop", said Timo Völkl, CTO, Munich Electrification. Munich Electrification's solution is its chip-based ME-SSR system. This system is designed to disconnect high-voltage circuits within microseconds without arcing or mechanical wear, according to the company. Compared to fuse-based protection, the SSR technology offers software-defined safeguards. This means the disconnect devices are configurable, self-testing to detect latent faults, and provide comprehensive data to predict failures before they occur, the company notes. The short-circuit protection is also resettable, and after a fault in the high-voltage system, the device remains operational instead of forcing vehicle downtime due to a blown single-use fuse. The ME SSR is available in two variants. As a standalone drop-in solution, it can be integrated into existing Battery Disconnect Units (BDUs), making it ideal for OEMs looking to enhance switching performance without redesigning the entire BDU. Alternatively, Munich Electrification offers the solution as an integrated module that combines switching and sensor technology in a single unit. This variant is suitable for new platforms and BDU consolidation projects aimed at simplifying system architecture. With the ME SSR, Munich Electrification is expanding its portfolio from battery management and sensor technology into high-voltage switching and disconnection technology. Until now, the company has primarily offered solutions for cell monitoring, current and voltage measurement, and functional safety. The ME SSR now builds on the company's Battery Management System (BMS) platform, which is already in use across numerous OEM programmes, including heavy-duty trucks. In the future, OEMs and suppliers can source battery management, sensor technology, switching systems, and safety software from a single provider. The unit acts as a central switch between battery and drivetrain, connecting power during operation and disconnecting it when parked, during servicing or in a fault. As electric commercial fleets scale, uptime is becoming a critical factor in drivetrain design. The ME SSR replaces mechanical contactors and pyrotechnic fuses, switching high-voltage circuits within microseconds without arcing or wear. Munich Electrification said the unit is configurable, self-testing and offers resettable short-circuit protection, so a fault no longer forces a blown fuse and vehicle downtime. The company said this improves drivetrain availability, supports functional safety to commercial vehicle standards, adds shock and vibration resistance, and simplifies integration by cutting components. The ME SSR is offered as a drop-in for disconnect units, or as an integrated module, ME SSR Next, combining switching and sensor technology for new platforms.
