Weekend Business News Editor
Fortune is seeking a weekend business news editor to assign, edit, and write the biggest breaking news stories in business over the weekends, with an eye for what will engage a national and global audience.
The editor will lead our weekend coverage, making sure the site breaks news on Saturday and Sunday, as well as work as part of the news desk two weekdays.
In this role, you will write multiple stories a day and pull wires, jumping into the news cycle with ideas and energy without hesitation; you’ll also help edit other writers as needed.
This role requires being a quick study who is self-directed, fast, and accurate; being able to develop sharp, compelling framing on complex issues quickly; and having your finger on the pulse of the news cycle, especially on tech, finance, economics, markets, and the world of work, as well as general news items our audience of business leaders needs to know.
You will need to operate autonomously with little oversight during the weekends, so a prior record of newsroom responsibility and great news judgment is essential. Strong candidates will have at least 3-5 years of full-time experience in business news.
Responsibilities and skills:
- Drive news coverage on the weekends and work as a player-coach alongside a small team of reporters and interns.
- Take ownership of our weekend coverage self-sufficiently as well as be responsive to input and direction from higher-level editors.
- File and publish breaking news, news analysis, and features to keep the Fortune website fresh and relevant all weekend long.
- Constantly monitor news and pull relevant wire stories in a timely manner.
- Juggle writing news hits with editing copy and pulling wires.
- Exhibit excellent news judgment and ambition to drive significant traffic.
- Write and edit quickly, cleanly, and accurately.
Requirements:
- At least three years’ experience framing, writing, and editing news stories for a national audience.
- Business news experience and knowledge is a major plus, as is weekend coverage experience and/or experience being self-directed and autonomous in a digital news environment.
- A track record of strong news judgment.
- Familiarity with data tools like Parsely or Chartbeat, with SEO techniques, and with social platforms strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with wire services like Associated Press, Reuters, and Bloomberg a plus.
Some great candidates may not fit neatly into what we’ve described above or have key skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
All applicants should submit a resume and a cover letter explaining briefly how this role is a fit for your background, skills, and career goals.
Location:
This role can be based anywhere in the US, with a preference for New York, where our headquarters is based. If you’re based within commuting distance of one of our offices, there will be a minimum of 3 days/week in the office. A part-time role for weekends only, rather than full-time (two weekdays in addition to weekends), is negotiable.
