Requirements
  • Sufficient proficiency in the target language (Czech) to teach foundation and upper-division courses; evidence of proficiency for non-native speakers may be required.
  • Sufficient proficiency in English to teach the target language effectively to English-speaking students, counsel and motivate students regarding language learning, benefit from professional development workshops, and communicate professionally with peers, supervisors, students and people outside the University.
  • Willingness to receive additional training and professional development in the field of language pedagogy.
  • Working proficiency in computer-based software, including Microsoft Office and internet applications.
  • Ability to learn and successfully use Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as BYU's Learning Suite.
  • Bachelor's Degree; must have required degree by start date.
Responsibilities
  • Teach one or more undergraduate Czech language courses as assigned by the Center for Language Studies.
  • Meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide supplemental instruction and guidance on course content.
  • Participate in professional development training workshops and respond to recommendations for improvement.
  • Write a course syllabus and set up course materials on the BYU Learning Suite platform.
  • Grade all Czech Challenge Exams completed during the same semester taught.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to communications and assignments from the Center for Language Studies.
  • Attend in-service training in August/September 2026; teaching responsibilities begin fall semester 2026, September 2, 2026.
Desired Qualifications
  • Academic degree in the target language and/or linguistics.
  • Successful experience teaching the target language to speakers of other languages.
  • Adequate understanding of Second Language Education theory, and language-teaching pedagogy to develop curriculum materials and to plan lesson activities in languages where commercially published textbooks and instructional materials are seldom available.
  • Knowledge of language-proficiency assessment criteria and the testing procedures needed to prepare and administer language tests and assign grades accurately and fairly.
