Requirements
- Nurse practitioners must be graduates of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
- Nurse practitioners must hold national certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center.
- Nurse practitioners must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- Nurse practitioners must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and Advanced Trauma Life Support certifications.
- Physician assistants must hold a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable.
- Physician assistants must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved training program.
- Physician assistants must hold certification from the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Physician assistants must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Physician assistants must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, and Advanced Trauma Life Support certifications.
- Candidates must be proficient with computers.
- Candidates must have strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for emergency medicine patients and their families in the DEM and immediate post-discharge ambulatory setting, coordinating hospitalization when necessary.
- Complete pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations with emergency medicine faculty collaboration or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with DEM clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings in patient evaluations.
- Perform succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient DEM discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests needed for outpatient follow-up appointments in the clinic, as applicable.
- Develop comprehensive individualized plans of care for emergency medicine patients, including teaching, discharge planning, referrals to other healthcare team members, or admission as necessary.
- Provide care for patients across the age continuum consistent with educational experience and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex emergency medicine patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in the DEM setting.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate emergency medicine patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting or upon admission, as applicable.
- Assist in collecting outcome measures, as applicable.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for emergency medicine patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
- Document the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely for every patient visit in the medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and documentation compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in emergency medicine practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role in delivering care to emergency medicine patients and families throughout inpatient hospitalization and in ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret emergency medicine data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost per case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist emergency medicine faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute care or emergency medicine experience is preferred.
- ACNP or FNP certification is considered for nurse practitioners.
- American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is encouraged.
- Master's-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
