- High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in an acute care setting, standalone emergency room, or military infirmary as a nursing assistant, medical assistant, monitor technician, emergency medical technician, or similar health profession; or completion of the first semester of an LPN, paramedic, or RN program; or completion of an EMT, LPN, paramedic, or RN program; or current employment as a UMMC nurse extern; or completion of a nursing or medical assistant course.
- CPR/BLS certification is required within three months of hire.
- Understand and use medical terminology.
- Complete phlebotomy training.
- Demonstrate basic task knowledge, including phlebotomy, suture removal, procedure breakdown and setup, casting and splinting, and stocking.
- Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate interpersonal skills.
- Understand and use computer systems, tools, and programs.
- Meet the physical and environmental demands of the role, including frequent standing and walking, frequent bending and crouching or stooping, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, and exposure to biohazards and potentially dangerous equipment.
- Assist with patient care and perform technical and manual services for individual patient needs within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
- Stock supplies, maintain equipment, report malfunctions, transport patients, monitor vital signs and pain, provide patient hygiene and comfort measures, assist with procedures, fulfill nutritional needs, and observe and report patient behaviors.
- Respect and maintain patient and family rights.
- Safely and competently use equipment in providing department services within the scope of practice.
- Contact consults, facilitate transfers to higher levels of care, obtain imaging films, answer the telephone, and order clerical supplies.
- Perform or assist with physician-ordered treatments, procedures, and medications when approved and supervised by a nurse and permitted by state law, including electrocardiograms, cardiac-rhythm monitoring and interpretation, recording strips, reporting rhythm changes, simple procedures, room setup, suture removal, casting, and splinting.
- Respond to intercom requests and obtain needed services from nurses, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
- Maintain unit-supply inventory, anticipate supply needs, place and expedite supply orders, and verify receipt of supplies.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment by turning over rooms, removing suction, intravenous poles, intravenous equipment, and other equipment, and following procedures, rules, regulations, and infection-control protocols.
- Bilingual ability is preferred.
