Job Description
Location:
New York, NY
The game designer will work with Puzzles & Games editors and the technology team to create games for The New Yorker that engage current subscribers and help us grow our audience. This person will be responsible for pitching and prototyping game ideas, driving the gameplay-testing process, and iterating on game designs based on feedback. The ideal candidate will have excellent creative judgment, an appreciation of The New Yorker’s identity, strong communication skills, and a knowledge of the game industry. Although this is an editorial role, familiarity with digital game technology and product design is desirable. This is a Guild Position.
Responsibilities:
Pitch, workshop, and prototype ideas for digital games on an ongoing basis.
Work with the Puzzles & Games editor to develop The New Yorker’s games strategy.
Clearly communicate gameplay and design concepts to engineers and UX/UI designers.
Collaborate with both editorial and technology teams throughout the build process.
Iterate on designs and add features post-launch based on user feedback.
Work with the Editorial Infrastructure team to design efficient workflows and tools for daily game creation.
Write and construct daily games, depending on time and ability.
Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.
Skills and Qualifications:
At least two mobile games that you’ve designed and released.
A portfolio of game concepts, with a focus on word games, trivia games, and puzzles.
4+ years professional experience in the game industry or a related field.
Bachelor’s degree
A strong grasp on The New Yorker’s sensibility and its current suite of games.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
The ability to manage multiple projects, encourage others to meet deadlines, and work collaboratively across teams.
Familiarity with UX design and best practices across platforms (mobile web, desktop, iOS, Android).
Experience working in content-management systems, Google Suite, and design tools such as Figma.
Preferred but not required: a working knowledge of web development and/or a programming language such as JavaScript.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $90,000 - $120,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
