Requirements
  • Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a job-related field of study.
  • Two years of work-related experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments, and the general public.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain certifications required by applicable standards for the assigned facility or department within six months of employment.
  • Must have a valid Texas Class driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Must provide a copy of a 10-year driving history.
  • Must maintain a good driving record and remain in compliance with Article II, Subdivision II of Chapter 90 of the Dallas County Code.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must complete mandatory pre-employment drug testing and be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Must be able to work changing shifts, mandatory overtime, double shifts, holdover assignments, and call-back assignments as required for an essential-personnel role.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age for applicable positions and pass all portions of the Juvenile Academy or applicable PREA and Ethics standards.
  • Must be able to work with juveniles who may have committed dangerous or aggressive acts in an emotionally demanding and stressful environment.
  • Must be able to work inside a secured facility with potential exposure to hepatitis, tuberculosis, lice, and other diseases.
  • Must be able to restrain and/or chase youths and may be required to use a vehicle to transport youths.
Responsibilities
  • Train, motivate, evaluate, and supervise staff; issue work assignments; and maintain time and attendance.
  • Develop, coordinate, and evaluate daily educational, therapeutic, and recreational programs and activities.
  • Operate assigned shifts effectively and efficiently while maintaining the proper staff-to-client ratio according to licensing standards.
  • Conduct inspections, drills, dormitory and cell searches, and physical searches of youths when contraband is suspected.
  • Prepare and complete reports and other documentation in accordance with applicable standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Make critical decisions during emergencies or potentially dangerous situations; conduct group intervention crisis sessions; and inform the supervisor of concerns as warranted.
  • Serve as back-up to staff and perform duties as necessary, including administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, disciplining youths, and chasing or restraining youths.
  • Assume managerial responsibilities in the absence of the manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
