Job Title: Clinical Nursing Instructor

Course:NUSC 2P85 – Clinical 2: Care of the Adult and Older-Adult(20positions)

Department: Nursing

Term of Appointment: Contracts for this course are for 12 completed shifts, which include clinical time, post-conference and preparation time. Clinical days may be scheduled Wednesday to Saturday, based on student registration numbers.

Each week includes:

• One 11-hour clinical shift (0630–1730) 

• One 1-hour virtual post-conference (day and time to be determined by the Clinical Nurse Instructor and students)

Wage Rate:$43.26-$49.95 per hour*

*The wage rate isdeterminedby seniority as outlined in Article 16 and Appendix B of the CUPE 4207-Unit 4 collective agreement.

Duties: 

Reporting to the Chair/Assistant Chair-Clinical, Department of Nursing, the Clinical Nursing Instructor is responsibleto:

• Prepare for and supervise students in a clinical setting for the experiential componentof the course. 

• Collaborate with the course instructor to ensure student activities are aligned with the course syllabus and learning objectives.

• Prepare patient assignments before students’ arrival on theunit(for hospital placements) carefully considering each student’sexperience level and capabilities and course learning objectives.

• Review the student’spreparation and plan for their clinical activities with attention and integration of nursing, pathophysiological, pharmacologic, and therapeutic concepts.

• Encourage an inquiring, theory, and evidence-based approach to nursing practice.

• Facilitate interprofessional and intraprofessional communication among students and all members of the health care teamor agency.

• Model patient-centered care. 

• Familiarize students with the relevant policies and protocols in the clinical setting with emphasis on any health & safety requirements.  

• Provide ongoing verbal feedback to students andmaintain a professional relationship with all learners.

• Assess reflective practice assignments, professionalpractice plans, and provide constructive feedback to students. Mark all assignments designated as the responsibility of the Clinical Nursing Instructor in the syllabus.

• Complete regular, comprehensive formative feedback notesregarding student progress and advisethe course instructorimmediately of serious or ongoing student concerns.

• Identify clinical performance gaps and facilitatethe development and implementation of studentsuccess plans in partnership with the course instructor as required.

• Complete midterm and final evaluation of student clinical performance and achievement of course competencies. 

• Facilitate student meetings / post-clinical conferences,and coordinateappropriate resources (e.g., multi-media).Foster discussion and reflection to enhance a positive and respectful learningenvironment.

• Adhere to confidentiality and privacy standards and legislation. 

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a BScN; Master’s degree preferred;

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario;

• Minimum of 3 years of clinical work experience as a nurse;

• Clinical work experience in in-patient medical, surgicaland/or complex continuing carenursing within the last 10 years and/ or clinical teaching experience in in-patient medical, surgicaland/or complex continuing carenursing within the last 10 years;

• Desire toinstruct and share knowledge with nursing students;

• Previous experience as a preceptor or with clinical instruction would be an asset;

• Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, and inclusion;

• Ability to address concerns and manage difficult situations, and to identify and act upon emergency situations;

• Effective organizational, time management, and communication skills;

• Ability to provide a valid Police Record Check (E-PIC or VSC) prior to the contract start date, if required by clinical agency. The Police check must be no greater than 6 months old as of contract start date;

• Ability to meet the clinical site occupational and immunization requirements.

Note: Successful applicants are expected to supervise all scheduled/rescheduled clinical dates for the course they accept.  This ensures consistency and improves the clinical experience for our students. Conflicts with another employer or vacation requests will generally not be approved.
