Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-4) coding and billing practices.
  • Ability to interpret operative and procedural reports.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to analyze data.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
  • A Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential is required or must be obtained within 6 months to 1 year after hire.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Health Care Management, Finance, Business, Nursing, or a related field is required.
  • Five years of experience in a multispecialty group practice, academic plan, hospital, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Responsibilities
  • Complete departmental compliance chart-review audits and participate in audits requested by third-party payors.
  • Assess provider documentation for ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding accuracy and compliance with University and government regulations.
  • Obtain and review charge documents, encounter forms, medical records, and billing procedures.
  • Evaluate results, identify system control weaknesses, and develop action plans and solutions with department management based on audit results.
  • Participate in implementing corrective-action changes.
  • Design and maintain accurate tracking logs, including spreadsheets, for ongoing investigations.
  • Follow up on corrective action and report findings to the Compliance Officer, Patient Financial Services, and University Auditor as needed.
  • Conduct training sessions with individual physicians and departments on medical billing compliance and provide input on educational needs.
  • Advise and assist in developing training materials and programs for clinical and billing staff concerning accurate coding, documentation, billing, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Conduct data analysis and generate reports using query tools to identify trends and problem areas for internal-audit focus.
  • Participate in the ongoing implementation of the Compliance Program and apply knowledge of the University Medical Billing Compliance Plan, operations, and procedures.
  • Stay current with best-practice coding and auditing practices and regulatory changes, and maintain the CPC designation through annual continuing education units.
Desired Qualifications
  • CPC credentials are preferred.
  • Computer skills including Epic, WEBI, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access are preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare auditing, Medicare and Medicaid, or a related clinical field is preferred.
