Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Prior experience as a medical assistant in an outpatient medical practice or other medical facility is required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide medical support assistance for clinic patients following established standards and practices.
  • Greet and assist patients as needed.
  • Obtain, organize, and maintain patient files.
  • Assist nursing and office staff with patient phone calls.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including entering office charges into the electronic health record.
  • Assist physicians and other clinical staff with patient exams, treatments, and procedures.
  • Work in coordination with and as directed by physicians, nurses, or the office manager.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms and take patient histories and vital signs as indicated.
  • Prepare examination and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
  • Instruct patients in sample collection, testing, and procedures.
  • Schedule appointments, examinations, surgeries, and tests as needed.
  • Screen and respond to triage calls and ensure follow-up by a nurse or physician.
  • Obtain and send medical reports and records from other healthcare providers as needed.
  • Sterilize equipment and instruments used daily, and clean and stock rooms as scheduled and as needed.
  • Attend required clinical meetings.
  • Assist with prior authorizations for applicable procedures and tests, and assist in completing FMLA, work-release, and related forms.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures as ordered, coordinate laboratory samples with outside laboratories, and complete or assist with in-office laboratory processing and reporting.
  • Complete online and other laboratory requisitions accompanying blood samples sent to outside laboratories.
  • Administer injections, immunizations, and medications as directed by physicians.
  • Assist physicians and clinical staff with patient prescriptions.
  • Dispose of medical waste appropriately.
  • Enter office charges and perform related support duties through the electronic medical record system.
  • Maintain patient privacy in written medical records and computer records.
  • Use electronic mail, time-and-attendance software, learning-management software, and the intranet.
  • Adhere to DCH Health System policies, procedures, compliance requirements, and behavioral standards.
  • Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures patient, visitor, and employee safety.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices and risks or hazards that may cause harm.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certificate of graduation from a medical assistant training course is preferred.
