Requirements
  • Diploma, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is required
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing with the State of Michigan is required
  • Basic Life Support certification is required
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, effective problem solving and prioritization skills, and the ability to process information confidentially
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, doctors and other staff; ability to maintain patient confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to function as an integral member of a healthcare team with other professionals
  • Must possess excellent computer skills with the ability to read, interpret and analyze data from various computer systems
  • Work requires sustained attention with mental/visual effort and capability to operate a computer between 40 and 70 percent of the time; regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 50 pounds) and occasional heavier tasks
  • Prepares for patient appointments, maintains documentation standards, and reviews charts prior to appointments to ensure requests and documents are available
  • Triage calls to determine urgency and whether appointments or phone advice are needed
  • Assists providers with minor and emergency procedures and examinations and provides reassurance to patients during examinations
  • Under provider direction, schedules tests and procedures in other departments and prepares patients for exams with appropriate instructions
  • Documents results from ordered tests/procedures and notifies patients with results and records them in the medical record
  • Performs point-of-care laboratory tests as directed by the physician and documents information in the medical record
  • Coordinates admissions and referrals and facilitates prescription requests
  • Provides patient and family education regarding care under provider direction
  • Takes verbal, telephone, and written orders for medications; administers medications as ordered and records data
  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information and records test and assessment results
  • Participates in performance improvement monitoring and uses quality improvement results to influence nursing practice
  • Ensures proper communication back to other healthcare team members
  • Attends staff and other meetings and participates in ongoing educational activities to maintain competency
  • Assists in completion of miscellaneous forms (Workers Compensation, Disability, State of Michigan) as required
  • Interacts with colleagues to contribute to professional development through knowledge sharing
  • Stocks supplies and maintains examination rooms
  • Familiar with various insurance and referral policies
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Responsibilities
  • Record vital signs, conduct initial patient assessment, obtain concise patient history, and provide clinical information and support to providers
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding medications, treatment and care and patient referrals
  • Process and post information to patient charts
  • Triages patient calls to determine urgency and need for appointments or whether phone advice is sufficient
  • Prepare patients for examinations including patient assessment, histories, vital signs, medication reconciliation, and routine testing of hearing, vision or other as directed
  • Assist provider with minor and emergency procedures and examinations and provide reassurance during examinations
  • Under provider direction schedule tests and procedures for patients in other departments and prepare patients for exams with appropriate instructions
  • Document results from ordered tests/procedures and notify patients; record in medical record
  • Perform point-of-care laboratory tests as directed by physician and document information in medical record
  • Coordinate admissions, referrals, and prescription requests
  • Provide patient and family education regarding care
  • Accept verbal, telephone and written orders for medications and administer as ordered, recording data
