Requirements
  • A Master's degree.
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of the Spanish discipline and current pedagogy for teaching college students.
  • Strong written and oral communication, problem-solving, critical-thinking, and computer-use skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and/or other required programs, Blackboard, and Owens email.
  • Ability to integrate varied teaching methodologies, understand community college students' needs, manage a classroom, organize and present material, design lessons and activities, monitor student behavior and performance, follow instructions and meet deadlines, recognize students' strengths and weaknesses, provide learning-focused feedback, and evaluate student work fairly using Department guidelines.
  • Evidence of teaching potential.
Responsibilities
  • Develop a syllabus using the assigned syllabus shell, including an evaluation procedure and calendar of assignments aligned with the course outline.
  • Prepare lesson plans and conduct classes during scheduled times using Department-approved texts.
  • Follow Department guidelines for course content and best practices.
  • Meet classes on all scheduled dates, on time, and for the fully allotted time.
  • For online teaching, follow Owens Community College Standards for Web Instruction.
  • Use appropriate classroom management techniques and technology.
  • Create and evaluate assignments, evaluative measures, and activities appropriate to the class.
  • Assign grades and return graded work in a timely manner, generally within one week.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, report attendance by the deadline, and maintain an electronic grade book.
  • Submit final grades and electronic grade-book and attendance copies to the Records Office and Department course management site by the deadline.
  • Administer course evaluations as instructed by the College.
  • Use the College course management system and approved Microsoft Office Suite and other compatible programs.
  • Submit requested electronic documents, including syllabi, grade books, attendance records, and other required files.
  • Check Owens email at least daily, respond to required messages within 48 hours, and check the campus mailbox weekly.
  • Respond to student inquiries promptly and meet with students outside class when necessary.
  • Attend Department and College workshops, training, development activities, and meetings as needed.
  • Participate in student learning assessment activities and perform assigned departmental duties.
  • Support the College, School of Liberal Arts, and their missions, visions, and core values.
  • Maintain professional and collegial behavior toward students, colleagues, supervisors, and the college community.
