Assistant Professor

The Assistant Professor will be a board-certified or board-eligible physician serving in an academic faculty role. This clinical faculty member will provide patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings, while also actively participating in the education and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees. The position reports directly to the Department Chair or their designee.

Clinical Activity:

• Clinical activities will include developing an outpatient practice in conjunction with the Meharry Medical Group in the areas of General Psychiatry. Faculty will also participate in inpatient duties.Provides psychiatric evaluations and medication management services to clients of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
• Provide appropriate clinical documentation and follow-up for services/treatment activities.
• Develops treatment plans by determining the nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders; establishing treatment goals and methodologies.
• Treats patients by utilizing psychotherapeutic methods and medications; discussing progress toward goals with patients; providing instructions; monitoring effect of medications;

• Provides supervision and clinical instruction to medical students/residents on various medical and behavioral health subjects, include medication management and psychiatric evaluations.
• Academic Service/Scholarly Activity
• Contributes to the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Division's scholarly research efforts.
• Serves on department and institutional committees assigned by the Department Chair.
• Teaching
• Teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows in the pre-clinical and clinical years.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
•Knowledge of human behavior and complex behavioral problems.
•Knowledge of principles and methods of psychiatry.
•Knowledge of mental illness, substance use, and co-occurring disorders.
•Scholarly work within the area of the individual’s discipline demonstrated by publication, presentation, or recognition as an authority.
•Expertise and experience in medical student academic supervision and assessment.
•Established track record of mentoring.
•Demonstrate the ability to work well with a diverse and dedicated patient care staff.
•Must meet institutional qualifications for a faculty appointment
•Possess excellent interpersonal communication skills
•Strong work ethic and high level of integrity

•Computer proficient

Education and Experience Required:

• M.D., D.O., or equivalent degree from an accredited medical school
• Board certification or have completed an ACGME-approved residency in sub-specialty or a
• Fellowship in specialty and be board eligible in Psychiatry.
• Education and Experience Preferred:
• Completion of an accredited residency in Psychiatry and/or fellowship completion in a subspecialty area of psychiatry.
• Minimum of 5–7 years of clinical psychiatry experience, inclusive of time spent in residency and/or
• fellowship training. New graduates are encouraged to apply,
• Experience or interest in working with underserved populations, community mental health programs,
• or integrated care models is a plus.
• Experience in academic or teaching settings is a plus, especially involving residents, fellows, or
• students.
• Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:
• Valid medical license (or eligibility for licensure) in the state of Tennessee and malpractice insurance
• coverage
• Board Eligible/Board Certification in Psychiatry (required) Credentialing requirements of community and teaching hospitals in Tennessee.
• DEA certificate
