Requirements
  • Nurse practitioners must be graduates of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
  • Nurse practitioners must hold national certification from a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center.
  • Nurse practitioners must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • Nurse practitioners must hold Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
  • Physician assistants must hold a Bachelor's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable.
  • Physician assistants must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
  • Physician assistants must be certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Physician assistants must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine.
  • Physician assistants must hold Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
  • Candidates must be able to use computers proficiently.
  • Candidates must demonstrate strong communication skills.
  • Candidates must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Manage comprehensive and individualized care for cardiology patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and the immediate post-discharge ambulatory phase.
  • Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
  • Complete integrated assessments.
  • In collaboration with cardiology faculty or by following established clinical guidelines and protocols, order additional tests or consultations when appropriate.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
  • Perform concise, comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
  • Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and tests needed before discharge for outpatient clinic follow-up appointments, as applicable.
  • Develop individualized cardiology patient care plans that include teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members as necessary.
  • Care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of educational experience and certification.
  • Identify unstable or complex cardiology care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
  • Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
  • Evaluate cardiology patients and coordinate follow-up, procedures, and tests in the ambulatory setting, as applicable.
  • Assist with collecting outcome measures, as applicable.
  • Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage the needs of patients and families.
  • Use equipment safely.
  • Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
  • Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
  • Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
  • Update clinical knowledge throughout the year.
  • Complete all identified clinical competencies.
  • Serve as a resource for staff caring for cardiology patients.
  • Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
  • Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
  • Document each patient's plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved hospital policies and documentation compliance standards.
  • Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in cardiology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem-solving and provide professional support.
  • Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
  • Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to cardiology patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
  • Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
  • Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
  • Review and interpret cardiology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
  • Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • Assist cardiology faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Acute care or cardiology experience is preferred.
  • An Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
  • Master's-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
