Position Summary:
Resident Assistants (RAs) are paraprofessional members of the Residence Life staff selected based on leadership, character, and the ability to relate well with others. Reporting to a Professional Residence Life Staff Member, RAs are responsible for the safety, security, and community development of summer residents. RAs are expected to be accountable and mature individuals who exert a positive influence on the summer residents.
Qualifications:
- Must have 1 semester of residence hall living experience at SMC by the beginning of the employment period.
- Must be in good standing with the College (academic, financial, and community standards) at the time of application and continue in good standing for the duration of employment.
- Must have a minimum cumulative and semester 2.50 GPA at the time of application.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Safety:
- RAs will respond to emergency and non-emergency situations, and contact the appropriate staff for assistance as necessary and as directed.
- RAs will participate equitably in a rotational on-call schedule (8pm-6 am).In addition, staff are expected to share on-call responsibilities over holidays (Father’s Day, Fourth of July, etc.)
- RAs are responsible for confronting and documenting any emergency or policy violation at all times. Documentation needs to be completed as soon as possible after the incident.
- RAs are expected to communicate with the Hall Director on-call as needed.
- RAs will provide support to students in distress.
- RAs will assist with emergency evacuations as needed and provide support during emergencies (ice, flood, fire, etc.).
- RAs are expected to abide by all residence hall policies, college policies, and Residence Life team expectations as described and provided in training sessions and through supervision.
- RAs will inform all residents about the Code of Student Conduct and Guide to Residence Hall Living.
Administrator:
- RAs will share and maintain their Saint Mary’s Google Calendar with their supervisor.
- RAs will complete required paperwork, incident reports, and other administrative tasks in a timely and accurate manner.
- RAs will complete room checkout reviews for summer residents as needed.
- RAs will spend 10 hours a week during July 20th-25th, 27th-31st, and August 3rd-7th completing Room Condition Reports
Community Development:
- RAs will help create and maintain a friendly, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere.
- RAs are expected to become acquainted with all residents in their building community.
- RAs should maintain weekly contact with each assigned resident.
- RAs will serve as a positive role model for all students. This includes but is not limited to modeling appropriate and mature behavior both on and off campus, as well as digitally.
- RAs will keep their supervisor informed of situations with residents.
- RAs are responsible for supporting the unique needs of the individuals in their communities. In partnership with other residents, RAs will build communities focused on mutual respect and support.
- RAs should be visible, approachable, and regularly available to residents.
- RAs are responsible for creating informational bulletin boards in their assigned areas and creating door decs for each summer Resident.
Resident Support
- RAs are responsible for assisting students in resolving situations of concern while remaining professional and respecting privacy, as well as keeping their supervisor updated and informed.
- RAs will get to know the assigned residents well enough to recognize behavioral changes or patterns requiring intervention.
- RAs will recognize when a concern is beyond an RA’s level of comfort and competence and refer students to the many resources available to them.
Teamwork:
- As members of the Department of Residence Life team, RAs are expected to support the department's mission, vision, values, and goals.
- RAs should communicate and work collaboratively with other staff within the department in pursuit of fostering community.
- RAs will honor the individual identities of their team by engaging in development opportunities to understand their identity development.
- RAs will help create social media content that the Department of Residence Life can use throughout the year
- RAs will assume responsibility for other duties as communicated by the Professional Staff Members of Residence Life.
Time Commitment:
- RAs will participate in bi-weekly one-on-ones with their supervisor.
- RAs will participate in a weekly staff meeting with their team and supervisor.
- RAs can request one week away before July 20, 2026 4. RAs are required to stay on-campus when on call.
