Requirements
  • A track record specifying experimental or data-generation work, including defining exit criteria and success metrics and determining what constitutes sufficient evidence.
  • Experience enforcing requirements or data-quality standards with stakeholders or external partners while maintaining the relationship.
  • Grounding in plant physiology or agronomy, or a strong track record running rigorous scientific research operations without that specific domain background.
  • Fluency in at least one of sensor hardware, experimental science, or applied statistics and data, with credible range across the others.
  • Experience sourcing, vetting, and contracting external research partners such as contract research organizations or university principal investigators on a budget and timeline.
  • Experience building or materially improving roadmap, tracking, or review processes for a small team.
  • Strong written communication sufficient to produce documents trusted by scientists, engineers, and the chief executive officer.
  • Comfort operating without a mature process to inherit.
Responsibilities
  • Validate new and existing model capabilities across new locations, tree ages, varieties, and species before commercial deployments.
  • Track every active research bet from discovery signal through deployed capability and identify its current stage and blockers.
  • Source, vet, contract, and hold accountable the contract research organizations and university researchers running data-generation projects.
  • Hold each data-generation project to specification from initiation through completion and identify data-quality problems during execution.
  • Translate between science and artificial intelligence/machine learning functions and external research partners into an executable plan.
  • Develop paper partnerships, a science advisory board, grant funding, and new research partnerships to expand research capacity.
  • Own the research roadmap and ensure it remains visible and trusted across the company.
  • Remain directly accountable for external partner relationships and data operations supporting the research roadmap.
Desired Qualifications
  • A PhD or equivalent deep research training in a life science or related field.
  • Experience with data generation for machine learning.
  • Experience at a hardware-plus-artificial-intelligence or sensing company.
  • Grant-writing experience.
  • Experience running a research operations function or project management office that later scaled up.

The Electric Plant Company

View

The Electric Plant Company turns signals from living plants into actionable environmental data using a low-cost bioware dongle that attaches to a plant and streams electrochemical data to the cloud. Its Large Plant Model analyzes these signals in real time to produce insights and recommendations for monitoring groundwater chemicals, fire risk, and carbon-related metrics. The approach combines hardware and specialized AI to interpret plant electrophysiology, and it focuses on co-building solutions with partners to scale a global sensor network of cloud-connected plants. The goal is to illuminate ecosystem health and environmental risk, support climate-resilient urban design, and advance sustainable landscaping and stewardship.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • The company closed an $11.2 million seed round in November 2025.
  • Hiring for deployment and electrical engineering signals active commercialization and product momentum.
  • A San Francisco headquarters and Detroit roots broaden access to talent and customers.

What critics are saying

  • First commercial deployment starts August 2026, so product-market fit remains unproven.
  • Seed-backed hardware plus field deployment raises burn risk before repeatable revenue arrives.
  • Competing sensors and remote-sensing tools can undercut expensive plant-specific instrumentation fast.

What makes The Electric Plant Company unique

  • Justin Mast and Lee von Kraus combine horticulture and biosignal-interface expertise.
  • Electric Plant pairs plant-signal hardware with a proprietary foundation model for real-time insights.
  • Their forward-deployed model targets plant care, urban landscaping, and environmental sensing together.
