About the Team:
In 2015, Wealthsimple acquired Canadian ShareOwner Investments Inc., the country’s first automated investment manager, a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF) and the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC). ShareOwner has since been renamed to Wealthsimple Investments Inc. and powers many of Wealthsimple’s products.
About the Role:
The Senior Director, Finance is responsible for overseeing the financial and regulatory reporting as well as managing financial and regulatory risks for Wealthsimple’s IIROC regulated broker-dealer entity. The Senior Director will also work closely with leaders across the company to shape new product strategies, ensure effective systems and processes exist with enablement team partners and develop innovative ways to deliver value to our clients and to Wealthsimple.
Responsibilities will include:
- Review of month end close results, variance analytics and regulatory reporting for the broker-dealer entity
- Establish and monitor adherence to policies & procedures for IIROC CFO related requirements
- Oversee and certify the accuracy of our books and records, accounting and financial reporting including risk adjusted capital
- Lead regulatory and accounting audits (e.g., IIROC, IRS)
- Establishing best-in-class and scalable processes, either by building upon existing processes or developing entirely new ones, such as supporting the ledger migration project to bring Crypto under our IIROC regulated entity
- Partner with Treasury to ensure that regulatory capital levels are adequately maintained
- Partner with R&D, Capital Markets, Operations and Compliance to apply regulatory rules and balance company objectives with customer value and dealer risk when launching new products and features (e.g., margin, options, securities lending)
Skills you’ll need to bring:
- Hold a CPA designation
- Thinking outside the box
- Problem solver with a process improvement and builder mindset
- Can work collaboratively across teams to achieve shared goals and objectives
- PDO and CFO Qualifying Exam a strong asset; a requirement to complete in first ~3 months if not already completed
- Have prior experience directly working for a Dealer-Broker in a senior role
- Demonstrable experience with establishing and monitoring adherence to policies and procedures related to financial IIROC requirements, including:
a) General financial understanding related to regulatory and industry knowledge, Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
b) Capital Adequacy, Books and Records, and Reporting
c) Credit Risk Management and Customer Accounts
d) Inventory, Pricing of Securities and Underwriting
e) Operations and Settlement
f) Protection of Firm and Client Assets
- Proven experience in leading, coaching and developing a high performance team, preferably in a high-growth or startup environment
- Builder-mentality with the interest in taking something from zero to one
