Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required; an Associate Degree in Nursing with applicable work experience will be considered.
- A minimum of 3 years of operating room experience with demonstrated progressive leadership is required.
- A valid Wisconsin Registered Nurse license is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required within 3 months of hire.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is required within 6 months of hire.
- Certified Nurse – Operating Room certification is required within the first two years in the position.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, direction, supervision, and coordination of operational activities in the Operating Room and Sterile Processing departments.
- Manage patient care, nursing personnel, surgical technicians, sterile processing technicians, and unit operations.
- Ensure delivery of high-quality services, manage resources and people, support quality and performance improvement, and serve as a role model for organizational values and mission.
- Provide direct patient care as needed and maintain expert knowledge of surgical practice.
- Consult with staff to monitor clinical practice, work with staff to effect change, and perform customer service.
- Demonstrate effective patient care, leadership, and professional behavior.
- Provide support to facilitate excellent surgical practice and other supporting roles.
- Promote and support the nursing vision and unit-based mission, values, standards, and goals.
- Facilitate collaboration, communication, and respect through role-modeling and coaching clinical staff and interprofessional team members.
- Coordinate and collaborate with providers, leaders, and clinical staff.
- Function as a clinical expert, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and incorporate research findings into practice.
- Work with the director to maintain and update policies for accreditation and changes in best practices.
- Interpret policies and procedures for staff members.
- Facilitate patient flow so patients receive appropriate and timely care.
- Provide direct patient care as needed to support surgical staff, including occasional on-call support.
- Guide surgical staff in developing culturally sensitive plans of care that honor each patient and family.
- Manage day-to-day staffing and resources by allocating resources according to patient census and acuity.
- Guide clinical staff on patient assignments and facilitate clinical staff development.
- Evaluate and hire staff who fit the organization and department culture.
- Manage scheduling and approve requests from clinical staff.
- Provide coaching, counseling, development, performance evaluations, payroll functions, and recognition to staff with support from team leads.
- Develop education and training for support staff and work with the Director to integrate these groups into the interprofessional team.
- Promote and facilitate interdisciplinary relationships with other care-team members.
- Participate in applicable professional organizations and support staff participation in professional development activities.
- Provide developmentally appropriate coaching and clinical consultation to clinical staff.
- Provide leadership and participate in unit-based projects.
- Promote and assist with clinical practice changes and quality initiatives in the patient care unit and sterile processing.
- Engage surgical staff in implementing and evaluating clinical practice changes.
- Work with the director to develop capital and operating budgets.
- Resolve recurring operational deficiencies, improve workflow, and eliminate waste within and between hospital departments.
- Ensure optimal use of supplies, space, and equipment through observation and education.
- Monitor fiscal reports with the director.
- Conduct quality and safety rounding to ensure compliance with CMS and other regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Assist the director with patient experience, staff engagement, and service excellence initiatives.
- Identify and address opportunities to improve operations, monitor outcomes, and provide feedback.
- Identify and respond to patient safety concerns and evaluate the impact of responses.
- Address patient safety event reports and analyze appropriate follow-up strategies.
- Participate in developing and implementing organizational strategies to improve patient transitions of care.
- Collaborate with quality and infection-control departments on process improvement initiatives and safety and quality checks and audits.
- Assist in developing and implementing policies and procedures for efficient and effective patient care.
- Serve on hospital committees as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred.
- Experience in a nursing leadership role is preferred.
