Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you’ll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.
Your Impact
Contribute towards scaling Axon’s Firmware Infrastructure by being the point person to manage Axon’s Joint Development Manufacturers (JDM) on next-generation products. This is a new, hybrid, role-type for the Axon Platform Firmware team that is critical for Axon to meet its 10 year moonshot to reduce deaths between the police and public by 50% in 10 years.
As a Senior Partner Engineer II, you’ll be responsible for ensuring that the Firmware Artifacts output by the JDM meets Axon’s Engineering Bar, assimilates into Axon’s repositories smoothly, integrates with any additional Contract Manufacturing (CM) and/or Local HQ Manufacturing, meets the requirements and needs of adjacent Engineering Teams and ensures timely delivery adherent to schedule. You have the obsession to ensure that the Firmware Artifacts are of the highest quality possible.
This role is primarily focused on the commercialization of 2 orthogonal, multi-year, Brand New IoT Product-lines that are strategically optimized to be resourced jointly with Axon and JDM vendors in Asia-Pacific (APAC). It is a hybridization of an (a) Firmware Engineer, (b) Release Manager, (c) Technical Project Manager, (d) Dev-ops Engineer - and of course, Quality Assurance (QA) is implied in everything we do. This critical role sits in the Axon Platform Firmware Team and reports directly to the Director of Engineering. The role will “connect the dots” to ensure that the Axon Platform Firmware Mechanisms and Expectations are reciprocated through the JDM vendors.
Firmware development environments primarily include a combination of Embedded Linux and Embedded Android, and custom Automated Test Systems (ATS).
What You’ll Do
Location: Work Remotely while living in Seattle or Scottsdale Local Hubs
Travel: Travel about 15% to APAC, Scottsdale, Boston, Seattle, and/or Europe
Reports to: Director of Engineering, Platform Firmware
Direct Reports: None
- Manage Axon and JDM vendor relations between Firmware Engineering Teams to align short-term, long-term requirements ensuring that the JDM vendor is building the “right thing”
- Manage Axon and JDM vendor relations between Firmware Engineering Teams to ensure that all source code written for Board Support Package (BSP) layers are of the highest quality bar before being merged into mainline
- Actively audit and review all schematics, source code and design documentation written by the JDM for correctness and cross-calibrate to the standards and mechanisms used by the Platform Firmware team and elsewhere
- Work hand-in-hand with the JDM vendor to ensure that clean interfaces are shimmed between the Platform Firmware and adjacent Software Teams
- Be the first escalation point with a low miss-rate for technical and schedule questions by internal Axon Engineering and Program Teams for questions about the JDM vendor Firmware Artifacts before outreach to JDM vendor in APAC time-zones and back, which incurs time delays
- Be the first escalation point with a low miss-rate for any requests to help diagnose issues at the BSP layers by internal Axon Engineering Teams before forwarding to JDM vendor in APAC time-zones and back, which incurs time delays
- Ensure the JDM vendor is writing, and actively review and contribute to, all associated Test Plans relevant to the Firmware Artifacts
- Personally perform Engineering Verification and Profiling of JDM vendor Firmware Artifacts auditing the Quality Bar
- Actively understand and ‘Self-host’ the Axon product itself as it develops to make it strong and become a SME on it allowing for a more correct and efficient Release Calendar
- Instrument the Firmware Artifacts with rich metrics and develop Dashboards for monitoring critical low-level Firmware Workflows (e.g., Battery, Thermal, Cellular, CPU, Memory, etc.) at both the individual and fleet-wide resolution
- Be an active participant in reviewing Product Requirement Documents (PRD) and writing System Requirement Documents (SRD) and Firmware Requirement Documents (FRD)
- Concisely write weekly regular Internal Status and Hardware Phase Gate documentation for Path-to-Launch meetings, Monthly Business Reviews, Phase Gate Checkpoint Reviews for Leadership, etc.
- Implement and sustain the Axon internal Firmware Release Calendar for all Firmware Artifacts merged and maintain alignment with adjacent Hardware and Software Engineering Teams
- Working with the JDM vendor, ensure that all builds, whether at the JDM vendor location, another 3rd party CM or in Scottsdale HQ Manufacturing are successful and boards are brought-up
- Stay abreast and current with all the other programs, mechanisms, technologies, etc. being supported by all teams and continuously spot improvements and innovations that can bi-directionally map between the Platform Firmware team and JDM vendor
- Implement and manage the CI/CD pipeline on the Axon internal environments where it relates to the JDM vendor Firmware Artifacts
- Write any source code as and when needed to support the program, patch fixes in drivers or elsewhere, automate workflows with scripts, bolster BSP test suites, etc.
- Be a Team Player, Mentor, Strong Communicator and be ready and willing to support the Team when needed
