Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent is required.
  • National certification through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution is required.
  • Maintain required continuing education units in accordance with the certifying body.
  • At least two years of experience in sterile processing is required.
Responsibilities
  • Work directly with Surgery Clinical staff and managers to assess, troubleshoot, and make recommendations for trauma and tertiary care surgical procedures.
  • Apply knowledge of the entire sterilization process, including infection control, instrument functional quality control, sterility maintenance, and aseptic technique.
  • Apply high professional and ethical standards when making critical decisions throughout the sterilization process.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for the sterile processing team and surgical clinical team.
  • Assume a lead role in the absence of the Manager or Coordinator.
  • Distribute instrument trays for surgical case carts according to the surgery schedule, pick lists, and surgeon preference cards.
  • Demonstrate understanding of instrumentation used during surgical procedures.
  • Maintain daily records and perform chemical, mechanical, and biological monitoring related to sterilization processes.
  • Conduct orientation for new team members.
  • Advocate for the safest and most appropriate sterilization method for patient-care instrumentation and equipment.
  • Maintain a safe environment through specific infection-control procedures.
  • Determine the best processing method for changing, highly technical tertiary patient-care instrumentation and equipment.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with applicable policies and standards.
  • Maintain compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
