Overview

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Writer to join the team that creates GitHub Docs (docs.github.com). 

In this role, you’ll report to the Director of Docs Content Systems. You’ll work cooperatively with product teams, content designers, and other technical writers to identify and validate opportunities to meet the needs of our Driver persona–GitHub users who support the work of developers by making changes to GitHub at scale. You’ll also build an understanding of GitHub’s other personas, and of the GitHub platform and its component products. 

You’ll create and maintain a content strategy for the Driver persona, and work collaboratively with Docs managers and content designers to enable the team to implement the strategy through the design, writing, publishing, and maintenance of user-focused technical documentation. You’ll develop and scope a range of content projects informed by customers’ needs and goals.

The Docs team is highly distributed and embraces an environment of asynchronous work. You’ll need strong communication skills and the ability to build working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe.

Responsibilities

• Develop technical expertise in the GitHub product, and collaborate with subject matter experts to define content opportunities. 

• Plan, research, design, write, publish, and maintain documentation content that meets user needs, company goals, and Docs standards. Proactively apply approval and review processes. 

• Assess effectiveness of new and existing content based on metrics, user feedback, and research with Docs personas; propose and execute improvements.

• Apply and assist with creating principles to develop relevant, technically accurate content designed for a variety of users. 

• Envision content experiences of the future by observing customers, and working with product and research teams. 

• Drive collaborative efforts with relevant cross-functional stakeholders to understand and align content with business goals.

• Participate in the GitHub content community of practice by developing skills and sharing information necessary for creating and delivering user-centered content (large groups such as brown bags, guides, informal meetings).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years experience in writing, content design, content strategy, UX design, information technology (IT), coding/programming, or related field

  • OR Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, English, Writing, Journalism, Communications, or related field AND 

  • 5+ year(s) experience in writing, content design, content strategy, UX design, information technology, coding/programming, or related field OR equivalent experience.

• 1+ year(s) project leadership / management experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated interest in software development, technical writing, or software documentation.

Compensation Range

The base salary range for this job is USD $77,100.00 - USD $204,600.00 /Yr.

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual’s base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
