Springer Nature expands use of AI across publishing workflows

Springer Nature expands use of AI across publishing workflows. 16 March 2026 Springer Nature has expanded the use of artificial intelligence tools across its publishing operations, with more than 1.5 million research papers supported by AI-assisted processes in 2025. The publisher expects the use of these tools to grow by a further 25% in 2026 as it continues embedding AI throughout editorial and peer-review workflows. According to the company, nearly 60 AI tools are now being used to support manuscript screening, editorial evaluation, author retention and research integrity checks. The tools are designed to assist authors, editors and reviewers at multiple stages of the publishing process, with human oversight remaining in place. Central to this strategy is Snapp, Springer Nature's peer review platform, which was developed with ongoing feedback from researchers. The platform is now used by more than half of the publisher's journals and integrates AI tools directly into editorial workflows. Springer Nature says the system is helping to streamline publishing processes while maintaining research quality. Survey data cited by the publisher indicates that 90% of authors, 70% of editors and 81% of reviewers rate their experience with the platform as "good" or "excellent". Frank Vrancken Peeters, Chief Executive of Springer Nature, commented: "We're embracing AI where it makes the biggest difference for researchers - reducing friction for authors, creating simpler workflows for editors and reviewers, and enhancing both the use and discovery of high-quality research. Our approach continues to be author-led, with transparency about where AI is used and clear human oversight and accountability, so we can continue to deliver the high-quality trusted research and publishing service our communities expect." The publisher highlighted several ways AI supported publishing activities during 2025: * More than 500,000 submissions were initiated via its Journal Finder tool, helping authors identify suitable journals for their work. * The Editor Evaluation tool was used across nearly half a million manuscripts to help editors assess scientific soundness. * The Peer Reviewer Recommender generated more than 400,000 reviewer recommendations. * The Journal Transfer Recommender made more than 500,000 transfer suggestions - a 40% increase on 2024 - helping authors identify alternative journals for their manuscripts, including those aligned with funding requirements. * AI-based integrity tools flagged around 25,000 papers for potential issues such as image manipulation, fabricated text or fake references. Springer Nature says it is continuing to develop new AI-powered features to support researchers, including AI-generated research summaries, natural-language search within papers and in-paper chat functions designed to improve discovery, accessibility and engagement. The publisher emphasised that its AI strategy remains researcher-led and that the tools are being developed in collaboration with the research community to ensure they are deployed responsibly.

Springer Nature responds to community feedback with its new journal series Nature Progress

Springer Nature responds to community feedback with its new journal series Nature Progress. February 18, 2026 Springer Nature today announced the launch of Nature Progress, a new Nature-branded journal series within the Nature Portfolio. With 84% of surveyed authors welcoming more opportunities to publish in Nature-branded titles - the new journal initiative underscores the publisher's commitment to expanding author choice and meeting researchers' needs. The journals in the series will be published open access (OA). Authors publishing in the new series will benefit from the expertise of specialist in-house Nature Portfolio editors, combined with the deep community expertise of external editorial board members. This collaborative approach ensures rigorous standards while reflecting the diversity of global research. Deborah Sweet, Executive Vice President for the Nature Portfolio said: "Nature Portfolio is a trusted cornerstone for the global research community, championing scientific progress and supporting researchers worldwide. We have always evolved in line with community needs - whether enabling greater collaboration and visibility around the research process via transparent peer review, delivering sustainable OA options for highly selective titles, or expanding access through OA funding initiatives. The Nature Progress series represents the next step in this ongoing commitment to serving our community." Deborah Sweet added: "With this new Nature-branded series, our aim is to broaden opportunities for researchers by combining the benefits of OA publication with the high engagement that publishing in a Nature-branded title can bring. Across Springer Nature, we remain committed to working with our community to ensure that regardless of discipline or location, we can offer researchers a trusted home for their work." The Nature Progress series will launch with two journals in the biomedical space, supporting the rapid dissemination of rigorously evaluated advances within the field. These titles will complement Springer Nature's existing portfolio of around 700 full OA journals and build on the more than 240,000 OA articles published each year by Springer Nature. As full OA titles, they will be supported by the publisher's APC waiver policy. For over 20 years, Springer Nature has responded to the needs of authors and funders by taking an active role in the OA transition. Working closely with authors, funders and institutions, the publisher has developed, and scaled, new sustainable routes to OA publishing. Springer Nature continues to invest in technology and partnerships to power the continued transition to OA, ensuring it remains an accessible option for all, whilst maintaining the high standards authors expect from its trusted brands. Nature Progress Oncology and Nature Progress Brain Health will open for submissions from 19th March 2026. More about the series is available here.

Jessica Maddox Named Inaugural Editor-in-Chief of Creator & Influencer Studies

Jessica Maddox named inaugural editor-in-chief of Creator & Influencer Studies. Friday, February 13th, 2026 Jessica Maddox (BA '12, MA '15, PhD '18), associate professor in the Grady College Department of Entertainment and Media Studies, has been named the inaugural editor-in-chief of the new, fully open access journal, Creator and Influencer Studies, published by Springer Nature. Maddox will lead the first academic journal devoted to research on influencers, creator culture and content production. "This is one of the greatest honors of my career," Maddox said. "It has been so rewarding to see how much this journal means to so many people already, and I'm thrilled and humbled to help provide this space for our research community." Given the growing influence of creator cultures, as demonstrated by the proposed Creator Bill of Rights in the US House of Representatives and the European Union's creation of an Influencer Legal Hub, Creator and Influencer Studies will offer scholars an interdisciplinary venue for their research on influencers and cutting-edge technologies. Maddox said having a journal focused on this field of study is long overdue. "Around the world, there is so much research happening into content creators, influencers, and live streamers. How we consume entertainment and information has radically changed, and having a journal devoted to making sense of this is so important." Maddox is a leading authority on creator culture and digital platforms, and a prominent voice in formalizing creator studies. She is also a public intellectual frequently featured in The New York Times, Vice, Wired, Vox, and on CNN. As the editor-in-chief of Creator and Influencer Studies, Maddox will lead the journal continuing her work as a founding member of the Content Creator Scholars Network. Her research on internet culture - from Alabama "RushTok," looking at sorority rush at the University of Alabama, to YouTube's Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) community - is foundational in academic studies of digital culture. Her first book, "The Internet is for Cats: How Animal Images Shape our Digital Lives" (Rutgers University Press, 2023), will be followed by "Anatomy of An Internet Scandal: Content Creators and the Politics of Going Viral," (University of California Press, forthcoming). As editor-in-chief of Creator and Influencer Studies, Maddox will lead an editorial team of associate editors including leading scholars Jess Rauchberg, Adri da Rosa Amaral, Qian Huang and Daniela Jaramillo-Dent. Supported by an editorial board of emerging leaders and established experts in studies of online culture representing more than 14 different countries, the journal will publish interdisciplinary research and will serve as an innovative venue for research on content creators and the creator economy. Creator and Influencer Studies is now open for submissions at https://link.springer.com/journal/44538.
