Requirements
  • A valid California driver's license with a clean driving record and insurability is required.
  • Current Laborers' International Union of North America membership with journey person classification is required for journeyman classification.
  • Candidates must be able to work in high-volume outdoor locations with frequent interruptions.
  • Candidates must have conflict-resolution, customer-service, multitasking, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Candidates must be able to lift, carry, and place materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Candidates must be able to stand and walk for long periods while flagging in varying weather conditions and at different times of day or night.
  • Candidates must have the vision abilities needed for the role, including close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Candidates must be able to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos; write clear instructions, explanations, and correspondence; and read, understand, and implement traffic control plans and industry guidelines.
  • Employment requires verification of legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Employment may require a criminal background check and drug screening in compliance with applicable laws.
Responsibilities
  • Use traffic signals, signs, traffic plans, and customer requests to safely coordinate traffic flow around work zones.
  • Assist with the day-to-day setup, maintenance, and teardown of work zones while meeting customer, state, federal, and company expectations.
  • Communicate with customers, the public, and other team members using two-way radios or hand signals.
  • Keep equipment in company trucks organized and in working order.
  • Develop knowledge of work-zone setup and professional flagging responsibilities.
  • Provide customer service through on-time arrival and well-managed work zones.
  • Recognize dangers using hearing and vision and take safe action to prevent injuries and accidents.
  • Follow company and state guidelines for effective and safe work zones.
  • Drive company trucks as needed.
  • Lift, carry, pull, place, and assemble traffic-control signs in the proper order to manage work-zone traffic.
  • Present information effectively in one-on-one and small-group situations to customers, clients, and employees.
Desired Qualifications
  • Current Laborers' International Union of North America membership with Apprentice 1–4 classification is preferred for apprentice classification.
  • Knowledge of the California Department of Transportation Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices is preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand traffic-control plans and permits is preferred.
  • Experience driving medium-duty vehicles and towing trailers is preferred.
  • A high school diploma is preferred.
  • At least two years of experience in a similar role is preferred.
  • Valid American Traffic Safety Services Association flagging certification is preferred; the company is willing to provide in-house certification.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish ability is a plus.
