Synthefy raises $6.5M for number-crunching models trained on numerical data instead of words

Synthefy has raised $6.5 million in seed funding led by Wing Venture Capital, with participation from Haystack, Samsung Next, Canonical Crypto and Lightscape. The startup is developing Structured Data Foundation Models that learn from numerical data rather than text, similar to how large language models process words. The company recently released Nori, an open-source model with 30 million parameters that outperformed Google's 1.6-billion parameter TabFM model in testing. Synthefy says its models can tackle tasks like fraud detection and dynamic pricing more efficiently than traditional machine learning frameworks. The platform allows companies to deploy models without extensive data preparation or training. Nori has been downloaded more than 600,000 times since its quiet release weeks ago. The funding will support research efforts, engineering hires and development of the next generation of Nori.

Taiwan Semiconductor emerges as winner from Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft's $595B cloud spending spree

Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft plan to spend a combined $595 billion on capital expenditures this year to expand cloud computing capacity. Amazon leads with $220 billion, followed by Alphabet at $200 billion and Microsoft at $175 billion. The spending spree responds to surging demand for artificial intelligence applications. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated capacity shortages will persist through 2027, with contracts for 2028 capacity already emerging. Recent quarterly results show Google Cloud revenue jumped 82%, Azure rose 43%, and AWS increased 37%. The massive infrastructure investments primarily fund data centre construction. Taiwan Semiconductor emerges as the key beneficiary of this spending, as the tech giants require advanced chips to power their expanding cloud infrastructure.

Microsoft exec: Skills, not technology, will determine Southern Europe's AI leadership

Microsoft executive Charles Calestroupat says skills, not technology, will determine which Southern European countries lead in AI. Calestroupat, Microsoft's Vice President for Southern Europe, told Fortune Greece that the region must transition from adopting AI tools to building ecosystems combining human capital, universities, startups and infrastructure. Microsoft's GR for GRowth initiative has trained 100,000 people in Greece in digital skills. Greece ranks first in AI use by Gen Z in Europe, according to Calestroupat. Microsoft is investing €1 billion to create three data centres in Eastern Attica, forming its first integrated cloud region in Greece. Athens has been upgraded to a central administrative hub managing 12 Southern European markets. The region faces challenges including a "transformation paradox", with 65% of people fearing being left behind whilst 45% prefer staying in their comfort zone.

Amazon vs. Microsoft: Which cloud behemoth is the better AI buy?

Amazon and Microsoft are competing for dominance in AI-powered cloud computing, with both companies integrating AI into their products whilst relying on external model providers. Each operates diverse businesses and maintains strong cloud computing divisions, benefiting from rising AI workloads. Both companies are investing hundreds of billions of dollars to expand capacity to meet growing demand. Microsoft has traditionally led in revenue growth, but Amazon recently overtook it in the latest quarter. Amazon Web Services posted 37% growth in the third quarter, a significant acceleration from its previous 20% range. This surge is attributed to increasing cloud computing demand driven by AI spending. Analysts suggest Amazon may maintain its growth advantage as AI-related cloud spending continues to expand, with current investments representing only the early stages of broader AI adoption.

JPMorgan raises Microsoft price target to $625, sees up to $41B Copilot revenue by 2027

JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee raised his December 2027 price target for Microsoft to $625 from $550 on 13 August, maintaining an Overweight rating. The target implies roughly 30% upside from Microsoft's trading price of approximately $492. The upgrade follows Microsoft's strong fourth-quarter results on 29 July, which sent the stock up more than 27%. Azure grew 43% in constant currency, crossing $100 billion, whilst Intelligent Cloud revenue hit $39.3 billion, up 32%. Chatterjee estimates Copilot could add between $24 billion and $41 billion in revenue. GitHub Copilot alone has 50 million users. The analyst expects Azure growth to accelerate as AI infrastructure spending rises, with margins stabilising as buildout matures. JPMorgan's target sits below Wells Fargo's $700 Street-high but above the 34-analyst average of $564.49.
