Responsibilities
  • Position the patient as directed by the surgeon to achieve best exposure for the surgical procedure, ensuring patient comfort and safety; pad points of pressure (elbows, heels, knees, eyes, face, and axillary region); ensure circulation is not impaired; guard against nerve damage; discuss and maintain the patient's temperature with anesthesia personnel to keep within the desired range.
  • Be familiar with common positions related to the surgical procedure and be able to use the equipment necessary to provide the position; competencies include using fracture tables, head stabilizers, body stabilizers, C-arm extensions, and any other equipment needed.
  • Upon completion of the procedure, evaluate the patient for possible positioning-related damage, including assessment of the skin, report abnormal conditions to the surgeon, and document and coordinate treatment.
  • Provide visualization of the operative site by appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding, packing with sponges, digital manipulation of tissue, suctioning, irrigating, or sponging, manipulation of suture materials (loops, tags, running sutures), and maintaining proper body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeon’s view.
  • Utilize appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis, including clamping and/or cauterizing vessels or tissue, tying and/or ligating clamped vessels or tissue, applying hemostatic clips, applying local hemostatic agents; temporary measures include applying tourniquets and demonstrating awareness of indications/contraindications and side effects of extended use, applying vessel loops, applying non-crushing clamps, and applying direct digital pressure.
  • Participate in volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques as appropriate.
  • Utilize techniques to assist with closure of body planes, including running or interrupted sutures with absorbable or non-absorbable material for wound layers; subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips; closing skin with surgeon’s directive (suture, staples, etc.); postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic per surgeon’s directive.
  • Select and apply appropriate wound dressings (liquid or spray occlusive materials; absorbent material affixed with tape or circumferential wrapping; immobilizing dressing, soft or rigid).
  • Provide assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Maintains established hospital policies, procedures, directives, quality, safety, environmental and infection control standards appropriate for this position
