Position: R&D Principal Cloud Operations Technologist
Previous experience: Strong technical experience in cloud software development and operations, ideally with a focus on C#, .NET Core, and Azure-based solutions.
Location: Derry / Londonderry, Northern Ireland – Hybrid (3 days at the office)

The job
As part of the Research and Development function, the global Cloud DevOps team combines software development and cloud operations to provide continuous integration and delivery of cloud-enabled products and solutions, along with continuous monitoring to ensure various cloud-specific customer requirements/SLAs are met.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced R&D Principal Cloud Operations Technologist with a focus on Cloud Development and Operations, you will play a pivotal role in leading and driving innovative cloud solutions that support the company’s strategic objectives. This role requires a deep understanding of cloud technologies, architecture DevOps practices, and an ability to work in a fast-paced, resource-driven environment.
Working closely with your development and portfolio colleagues, together you will bring new solutions to the cloud following a standard framework to ensure they are operationally secure, stable and scalable.
The global, 24x7 nature of the team means there may be a requirement for occasional work outside of the standard day and to be on call as part of a shared team rota.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge cloud solutions, aligning with the company’s strategic goals.
- Identify and evaluate emerging cloud technologies and industry trends to drive innovation and continuous improvement.
- Develop proof-of-concept project to explore new technologies and assess their viability for the company’s needs.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance in the development of cloud-native applications, microservices, and APIs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and ensure the seamless integration of cloud solutions into existing systems.
- Serve as a Microsoft Azure/AWS technical resource in team’s efforts to determine the needs of our client’s businesses that will simplify and automate the applications as well as make them more efficient.
- Oversee the deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of cloud environments, ensuring optimal performance, security, and cost-efficiency.
- Implement and refine DevOps practices to enhance automation, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code (IaC) methodologies.
- Lead incident response and problem resolution efforts for cloud operations, ensuring minimal downtime and quick recovery.
- Mentor and coach junior technologists and engineers, fostering a culture of learning and innovation.
- Build a community and following around our company solutions and brand awareness.
Ideal experience
- Ability to learn and adapt quickly.
- A minimum of 7 years’ experience in Software Development and Design using modern web technologies and supporting toolsets including source control, static code analysis and CI/CD tooling.
- Hands-on in cloud infrastructure as code development, with the ability to lead architecture and technology evaluations and decisions.
- Willingness to learn cloud security principles, practices and tools.
- Strong enterprise software development experience preferably with e.g. C# .NET.
- Expertise in PowerShell, Bash and/or Node JS scripting.
- Knowledge of API development, REST, microservices and serverless architectures.
- Knowledge and experience of operational support, software development and deployment methodologies and principles.
- Strong written, verbal and presentation skills, able to convey information clearly and concisely to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Attention to detail, diligent and tenacious.
- Excellent analysis and dissemination skills.
- High degree of personal motivation and ability to self-manage.
- Maintains and develops relevant industry and technology knowledge.
Great skills to have
- Experience with cloud infrastructure governance. For example, cross account or subscription management, setting up and configuring security, logging, or governance services.
- Cloud infrastructure experience, at scale - Design, Deployment, Operation.
- Ability to guide development teams designing cloud solutions and preparing for operations.
- Experience with monitoring and alerting.
- Full stack web development experience.
- Linux, and strong focus on automation, command line, scripting etc.
- Experience using Docker and ideally Kubernetes.
- Experience as an architect.
- Operational experience, on-call support.
- Database experience - administration, development, and tuning.
- Hands-on experience working within an Information Security accredited framework e.g. ISO27001, 27017/18.
- Experience working in Agile software development such as Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).
