Rent the Runway enables people to rent designer clothing and accessories instead of buying them. It offers membership plans that let customers borrow a certain number of items per month (or swap unlimited items) and also provides one-time rentals for special occasions. Customers browse items online, reserve what they want, and the company handles shipping and dry cleaning, making the process easy. The service works by giving access to a rotating wardrobe at a fraction of retail prices, with logistics managed by Rent the Runway. It differentiates itself by combining a subscription model with a large selection of high-end brands and convenient maintenance, positioned within the growing sharing economy and sustainability trend. The goal is to provide affordable, flexible, and sustainable access to fashion, reducing the need to buy new clothes and cutting down waste.

Rent the Runway eyes turnaround under new owners after $1.1B accumulated deficit

Rent the Runway is undergoing a strategic overhaul under new ownership after accumulating a $1.1 billion deficit since its founding. The company was recapitalised last year by Story3 Capital and other investors, who see opportunity in the established brand despite past losses. Managing partner Peter Comisar noted the firm inherited 17 years of brand-building and customer trust. Interim chief executive Teri Bariquit is refocusing on the company's original event-rental business, which had been neglected as subscription services grew. The company posted revenues of $329.8 million last year, up 7.7 percent, with 143,558 active subscribers and net earnings of $22.6 million. Bariquit is exploring new revenue models including revenue-sharing with brands and leveraging the company's dry-cleaning infrastructure to handle returns for fashion partners. A permanent chief executive search is underway.

Menswear rental startups gain traction as Nuuly hits $568M in sales

Menswear rental companies are evolving beyond special occasions into everyday wear, creating new customer intelligence opportunities for brands. Taelor and Rent With Thred are leading this shift, offering busy professionals curated wardrobes without the hassle of shopping or laundry. Urban Outfitters' Nuuly reported $568 million in net sales for the fiscal year ending January 31, 2026, with over 500,000 active monthly subscribers. Rent the Runway posted quarterly revenue of $87.6 million with approximately 147,600 active subscribers. The rental model generates what Taelor calls "wear data" — continuous feedback on how customers actually use clothing. This provides brands with insights traditional retail cannot capture, such as garment durability and styling preferences. Nuuly invested $60 million over five years to build its fulfilment infrastructure. Everyday menswear rental faces operational challenges, as frequent wear accelerates garment deterioration and increases cleaning costs. However, the ongoing customer relationship creates valuable real-time intelligence that helps brands understand product performance beyond the point of sale.

Rent the Runway revenue climbs 29% in Q1.

Rent the Runway revenue climbs 29% in Q1. Rent the Runway announced on Wednesday sales for the first quarter rose 29.2% to $89.9 million, with the U.S. rental platform clocking growth across its subscriber base. The New York-based firm said ending active subscribers grew 5.8% to 155,692 during the three months, and average active subscribers totalled 149,744 up 12.2% on the prior-year period. Meanwhile, total subscriber numbers lifted 7.6% to 196,147 during the quarter ending April 30. Net loss narrowed to $18.9 million from $26.1 million in the prior-year period, while adjusted EBITDA improved to a loss of $0.8 million compared to a loss of $1.3 million a year ago. The results come during a period of leadership transition for the company. Earlier this year, Rent the Runway appointed retail veteran Teri Bariquit as interim chief executive officer and president, succeeding co-founder Jennifer Hyman, who stepped down after leading the company for 18 years. Hyman will remain an advisor through January 2027. Bariquit brings nearly four decades of retail and merchandising experience to the role, including senior leadership positions at Nordstrom. She joined Rent the Runway's board of directors in October 2025 and is overseeing the business while the company searches for a permanent CEO. "Rent the Runway is operating from a solid foundation, supported by a strong core business, a renewed capital structure aligned with our long-term ambitions, and diversified set of revenue streams," said Bariquit. "I'm honored to step into this leadership role at such an exciting moment. The team has built remarkable momentum, and this quarter's results reflect the strength of a strategy that is clearly resonating with our customers." Looking ahead, Rent the Runway expects second-quarter revenue of between $91 million and $95 million, with adjusted EBITDA margins ranging from 5 per cent to 8 per cent. For the full fiscal year, the company continues to project double-digit revenue growth and adjusted EBITDA margins between 4 per cent and 7 per cent.
