What Will You Do?
We are seeking a Reliability Engineer to join the Lumentum team in Ottawa. The Reliability Engineer is a crucial member of the product development team who is tasked with ensuring Lumentum’s photonic telecommunication and data center products exceed industry and customer requirements for reliability and durability. This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of products that are deployed in virtually every telecommunication system in the world.
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Work with cross-functional product development teams to ensure product reliability and durability exceeds market requirements, industry standards, and customer expectations.
- Define qualification and reliability requirements for products, sub-components, and raw materials.
- Apply engineering judgement to select appropriate tests, measurement parameters, and acceptance criteria to align with field conditions and target lifetime.
- Plan, schedule, and oversee qualification and reliability testing on raw materials, sub-components, and finished products. Ensure testing is completed on time and on budget.
- Analyze data and report on findings. Analyze failures. Identify issues and opportunities for improvement.
- Perform testing to evaluate product changes.
- Predict failure rate (FIT) and availability for new products.
- Monitor and report on the field reliability of deployed products. Compare with predictions.
- Perform reliability risk assessments for quality excursions. Apply physics of failure, acceleration modeling, experimentation, etc.
- Work with external labs to coordinate and perform third-party testing (e.g., NEBs, EMI/EMC, Electrical Safety, and LASER Safety). This will require limited travel to set-up and operate equipment.
Requirements
- 5+ years work experience in optical communications, electronics, semi-conductor, or related industry in a product reliability, product qualification, failure analysis, design engineering, process engineering, or compliance role.
- Familiarity with optical and electrical measurements and measurement equipment.
- Failure analysis and root cause analysis experience.
- Able to scrutinize and interpret technical literature, reports, and data. Spot flaws. Provide meaningful recommendations.
- Knowledge of statistics.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to operate effectively in highly technical and multi project environment.
- Graduation from an BSc. or MSc. program in electrical engineering, optical engineering, physics, etc. Advanced degree preferred.
Advantageous for the position
- Knowledge of electronic and optical manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge of electrical and optical components (e.g., ICs, FPGAs, Interconnects, LASERs, Optical Detectors, Switches, WSS, MEMs, LCOS, etc.)
- Knowledge of material analysis techniques.
- Knowledge of IEC, JEDEC, and Telcordia Qualification Standards.
- ASQ CRE, Six Sigma
- Knowledge of Weibull++, BlockSim, Jump.
