  • Completion of some high school coursework.
  • A few months of experience in processing or distribution of goods or customer service.
  • Knowledge of lifting guidelines.
  • Cash handling experience is required.
  • Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures, including bank deposits and summary reports.
  • Experience working in a computerized environment.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Good interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 29 pounds frequently without assistance, including bending, twisting, pulling, and pushing products.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift or move 30 pounds.
  • Willingness to wear gloves when working with unknown contents and follow universal precautions.
  • Ability to work weekdays and/or Saturdays as schedules vary from week to week.
Responsibilities
  • Greet and interact with customers and donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
  • Contribute to store sales targets and provide efficient, courteous customer service while using tact with difficult customers.
  • Maintain knowledge of product pricing and featured sale products and protect the integrity of donated items.
  • Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
  • Accurately complete customer transactions, including cash and debit sales, with minimal voids, overages, or shortages.
  • Follow store policies regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
  • Process donated materials by loading, unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, and storing them.
  • Respond to customer stock enquiries by phone and in person.
  • Monitor activity within the store to support store security.
  • Assist with store layout plans, window displays, and merchandise displays.
  • Maintain an attractive store through tidy maintenance.
  • Contribute to inventory control by retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing items as directed.
  • Assist with donation turnover, replenish sales-floor inventory, and remove inventory from the sales floor as directed.
  • Handle merchandise safely and in an organized manner and assist with stock rotation.
  • Bag textiles for recycling and place metal recycling in the appropriate location.
  • Assist donors with contributions, unload donations, and place stock in the appropriate location.
  • Maintain proper sorting and processing of goods and ensure compliance with quality standards and correct pricing.
  • Contribute to staff and customer safety by removing snow, clearing fire exits, cleaning spills, and removing obstacles.
  • Maintain an attractive, organized, and safe store appearance.
  • Tidy and restock shelves and clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary.
  • Clean the lunchroom, washroom, and other common areas on a rotational basis.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Use and maintain organizational assets according to established guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
