Requirements
  • A minimum of five years of full-time professional experience in journalism and media relations, with demonstrated success working with print, broadcast, and electronic news outlets.
  • Strong relationships with mainstream science and technology reporters regionally in Los Angeles, nationally, and internationally.
  • Superior newsroom writing using AP Style and editing skills, with a proven track record of translating technical and scientific research into compelling content for general audiences.
  • Experience spearheading high-profile media events and handling a large number of incoming media inquiries.
  • Expertise in identifying, capturing, and delivering media-relations metrics to demonstrate return on investment.
  • Advanced knowledge of using social media to build and strengthen a school brand.
  • Ability to think creatively and critically, prioritize workload efficiently amid competing deadlines and fluctuating priorities, and work effectively with a team in a fast-paced setting.
  • Ability to attend evening and weekend events occasionally to facilitate media coverage and other communication needs.
  • Experience working in a public-relations agency, in-house communications, and/or nonprofit environment, with the ability to handle high-pressure and deadline-driven tasks.
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain general, trade, and topic-specific media lists for UCLA Samueli.
  • Identify newsworthy pitches from research and other school activities.
  • Work with traditional and digital-media journalists to identify story ideas suitable for faculty and students.
  • Position selected faculty experts as go-to sources for target media outlets.
  • Develop and formalize a proactive strategic media-relations program to generate consistent positive external news coverage.
  • Develop and edit electronic publications, web content, social media posts, web features, event invitations, research press releases, op-eds, student and alumni profiles, monthly electronic newsletters, marketing materials, presentations, school announcements, and other communications content.
  • Assist the Chief Marketing Communications Officer in drafting speeches and talking points for internal and external speaking engagements by key school leadership.
  • Coordinate posting on the school's main social-media channels, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, to ensure proactive and consistent messaging.
  • Develop and implement a proactive public-relations program, including a UCLA Samueli speakers bureau, to raise visibility for the Dean and other key school leaders.
  • Support the school's strategic plan by elevating its brand among its constituents.
