Requirements
  • A firm commitment to the mission of Brigham Young University.
  • A Bachelor's degree in technical theatre or a related field and experience working in professional theatre, live entertainment, and/or touring productions.
  • Demonstrated experience working with scenic and props designers.
  • A demonstrated understanding of production disciplines including audio, video, rigging, and fabrication.
  • Experience with woodworking, furniture building and repair, and metalworking.
  • Experience with soft goods and sewing skills.
  • Experience with casting and molding, sculpting, and carving.
  • Experience with small motors, mechanisms, and electronics.
  • Experience with scenic painting and finishing techniques.
  • Experience with standard shop tools and equipment.
  • Ability to accurately estimate production costs and create and maintain budgets.
  • Ability to read and interpret working drawings and disseminate that information clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to work long hours and manage an irregular schedule including weekends and holidays.
  • Training and understanding of safe working practices in theatre.
  • A clear understanding of the artistic process to collaborate with designers and directors.
  • Experience supervising and managing a team of student employees.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with artistic directors, directors, designers, and production management to support the development and realization of scenery and props.
  • Evaluate designs and develop material and labor estimates while maximizing available financial resources.
  • Coordinate with designers throughout the production process to solve problems, improve products, and implement changes.
  • Supervise the purchasing, construction, painting, finishing, and installation of scenery and props, including hand props, furniture, furnishings, and set decorations.
  • Manage production budgets, materials, labor, and financial records.
  • Coordinate technical needs throughout construction, rehearsals, performances, and events.
  • Maintain production research, documentation, records, and archives.
  • Maintain a safe working environment through appropriate training, equipment maintenance, recordkeeping, and incident reporting.
  • Develop relationships with performance-site managers and technical personnel to coordinate production needs and establish appropriate work parameters.
  • Coordinate load-in, technical support, load-out, and transportation for performances.
  • Supervise student employees and volunteer crews.
  • Ensure productions operate safely and effectively while maintaining the producing entity's vision, scope, and budget.
  • Provide technical direction and support during assigned domestic and international tours.
  • Coordinate with department production shops to ensure equipment, props, and costumes are maintained and tour-ready.
  • Coordinate transportation, loading, and unloading of equipment, props, and costumes, including driving trucks for domestic tours as assigned.
  • Secure required permits, paperwork, and transportation documentation and ensure compliance with applicable trucking and equipment transportation regulations.
  • Foster mentorship, experiential learning, and professional development for students through campus productions and university-sponsored tours.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student stage crews while ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures.
