Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Research Administration, Business, Public Health, or a related field is required.
  • Five or more years of progressive experience in technology transfer, intellectual property management, licensing, commercialization, business development, or sponsored programs administration are required, including exposure to post-award grants and contract administration.
  • Advanced knowledge of technology transfer, patent practices, patent portfolio management, licensing, commercialization, and biomedical product development is required.
  • Strong understanding of the legal and business implications of contracts, licenses, patent management, royalty sharing, confidentiality, materials transfer, collaboration, and evaluation agreements is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to use or learn intellectual property docketing, customer relationship management, contract management, and portfolio tracking systems are required.
  • Working knowledge of post-award grants and contracts administration, including the NIH Grants Policy Statement, OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), effort reporting, subrecipient monitoring, and Federal Financial Report and Research Performance Progress Report submission requirements is required.
  • Cultural competency and the ability to communicate effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds are required.
  • Strong scientific, analytical, interpersonal, negotiation, and project management skills are required.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and advance the technology transfer function and enterprise intellectual property portfolio.
  • Provide post-award administration support to the Office of Sponsored Programs, including award setup, financial monitoring, compliance reporting, and award close-out.
  • Evaluate invention disclosures for technical merit, patentability, commercial potential, competitive landscape, and practical utility, including conducting or coordinating prior-art searches, market research, and technology valuation analyses.
  • Recommend patent filing, prosecution, continuation, national phase, maintenance, and abandonment strategies with inventors, internal stakeholders, and outside patent counsel.
  • Develop written technology development and commercialization plans with milestones, timelines, and recommended pathways.
  • Identify and engage potential licensees, collaborators, strategic partners, and investors in life sciences industries.
  • Prepare and disseminate non-confidential marketing materials, technology summaries, opportunity briefs, and business presentations.
  • Negotiate business and intellectual property terms for nondisclosure agreements, materials transfer agreements, option agreements, evaluation and testing agreements, license agreements, patent management and royalty-sharing agreements, collaboration agreements, and related contracts.
  • Maintain and manage the enterprise patent and technology portfolio docket, including patent prosecution deadlines, maintenance and annuity decisions, portfolio status, and outside counsel activity.
  • Manage license-related obligations, including milestone dates, diligence requirements, fees, royalty reporting, royalty payments, and other financial or partner obligations.
  • Establish, implement, and continuously improve standardized technology transfer procedures, templates, evaluation frameworks, intake processes, tracking tools, reporting metrics, and decision-making practices.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with inventors, researchers, commercial partners, funders, outside counsel, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
  • Organize and lead portfolio, licensing, and commercialization meetings and prepare recommendations and status reports for senior stakeholders.
  • Serve as a resource across the organization on intellectual property management, commercialization, and intellectual-property-related contracting.
  • Support award setup and account establishment upon Notice of Award, including budget allocation, expense coding, and coordination with institutional finance and accounting.
  • Monitor award burn rates, budget-to-actuals, and financial projections, and support cost transfers, rebudgeting requests, no-cost extensions, and other post-award modifications.
  • Support compliance monitoring and timely submission of Federal Financial Reports, Research Performance Progress Reports, technical progress reports, effort reports, and property or equipment reports.
  • Assist with subrecipient monitoring and risk assessment, sponsor prior-approval requests, and drawdown or invoicing coordination.
  • Support award close-out activities, including final financial reconciliation, allowable-cost verification, final technical reporting coordination, subrecipient final invoices, equipment disposition, and record-retention compliance.
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation and support the Office of Sponsored Programs during federal audits and sponsor site visits.
  • Perform other duties as needed to fulfill the functions of the position.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in a research institution, academic medical center, nonprofit research organization, healthcare organization, or life sciences environment is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of FDA-regulated product development, preclinical and clinical development, translational research, investigational new drug and investigational device exemption concepts, and the clinical trials process is preferred.
  • Familiarity with commercialization pathways including out-licensing, option agreements, sponsored research, strategic partnerships, spin-outs or start-ups, gap funding, entrepreneurial support, and private or public investment is desirable.
  • Familiarity with electronic research administration systems such as eRA Commons, ASSIST, and Grants.gov is preferred.
