Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience as a medical coder are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) is required.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy is required.
Responsibilities
  • Function as an advanced coder in the abstraction and in-depth analysis of medical documentation and assign appropriate procedural terminology and medical codes in accordance with applicable coding rules and policies.
  • Analyze, enter, and manipulate databases.
  • Respond to or clarify internal requests for medical information.
  • Use knowledge of coding systems and system logic to review codes created by electronic charge capture and/or assign codes through medical record documentation in accordance with recognized coding guidelines.
  • Review and resolve coding denials.
  • Resolve claim problems caused by improper coding and provide feedback for correction and follow-up.
  • Abstract data and review codes for accuracy.
  • Perform system edit checks and correct errors as needed.
  • Respond to coding information requests from various sources.
  • Communicate documentation improvement opportunities and coding issues to providers, departments, and designated leaders for follow-up and resolution.
  • Consult with internal customers and external vendors to obtain greater specificity or clarification when documentation appears inconsistent or incomplete.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate's degree is preferred.
  • AHIMA accreditation examination credentials as Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) are preferred.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or Certified Medical Coder (CMC) certification from Practice Management Institute is preferred.
