3M's fiber-optic tech for AI data centres could grow fivefold as Microsoft certifies expanded beam connectivity

3M, the company known for Post-it notes and Scotch tape, has developed expanded beam optical connectivity technology that helps data centre operators deploy fibre-optic networks faster for AI workloads. The technology saves 85% of installation time by spreading light across a wider surface, making connections more resistant to dust and vibrations. Microsoft has certified the technology for use in its Azure data centres after several years of testing. 3M is conducting trials with other hyperscalers whilst expanding manufacturing capacity. The business is expected to generate $40 million to $50 million in revenue this year but could grow four to five times over the next several years. 3M plans to double production capacity this year and again over the following 12 to 18 months.
