Requirements
  • A nurse practitioner must be a graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
  • A nurse practitioner must hold national certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers.
  • A nurse practitioner must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
  • A nurse practitioner must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
  • A physician assistant must hold a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable.
  • A physician assistant must be a graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
  • A physician assistant must hold certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • A physician assistant must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • A physician assistant must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
  • The professional must provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and, where applicable, hospital privileges.
  • The professional must demonstrate expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum of their educational experience and certification.
  • The professional must demonstrate critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making.
  • The professional must demonstrate the ability to utilize equipment in a safe manner.
  • The professional must base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, or research findings.
  • The professional must utilize teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies.
  • The professional must complete all identified clinical competencies.
  • The professional must document the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient's medical record in accordance with approved hospital and WVUM policies and compliance standards.
  • The professional must collaborate with other leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
  • The professional must work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem solving and provide professional support.
  • The professional must participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
  • The professional must document hours and submit billing reports, as appropriate.
  • The professional must review and interpret cardiology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports.
  • The professional must be proficient with computers.
  • The professional must have strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • The Advanced Practice Professional coordinates and clinically manages hospitalized patients comprehensively.
  • The Advanced Practice Professional coordinates the involvement of medical and surgical specialty teams to develop comprehensive patient plans.
  • The Advanced Practice Professional reviews plans of care with clinical team members and participates in directing that care.
  • The Advanced Practice Professional performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and peri-operative services.
  • The Advanced Practice Professional coordinates ambulatory management or discharge planning and follow-up, as applicable.
  • The Advanced Practice Professional participates in educating residents and medical and nursing students.
  • The professional manages individualized care for hospitalized patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and plans disposition for immediate post-discharge ambulatory care.
  • The professional completes daily rounds and consults or pre-procedure evaluations.
  • The professional completes integrated assessments.
  • The professional orders additional tests or consults in collaboration with hospitalist faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • The professional performs diagnostic tests and communicates the results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
  • The professional consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal evaluation findings.
  • The professional performs comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in the medical record.
  • The professional facilitates discharge by coordinating services and tests needed before discharge for outpatient follow-up appointments, as applicable.
  • The professional develops individualized inpatient plans of care, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
  • The professional identifies unstable or complex inpatient care situations and facilitates appropriate intervention in the clinic or hospital setting.
  • The professional recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care.
  • The professional evaluates general medicine patients and coordinates ambulatory follow-up, procedures, and tests, as applicable.
  • The professional assists in collecting outcome measures, as applicable.
  • The professional updates their knowledge base throughout the year.
  • The professional serves as a resource for staff caring for hospitalized patients.
  • The professional provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in their area of expertise.
  • The professional participates in community programs and distributes literature, as appropriate.
  • The professional provides leadership in developing and implementing changes in the cardiology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
  • The professional participates in and provides leadership for committees and task forces.
  • The professional participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
  • The professional assists hospitalist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
  • The professional performs other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Acute care or hospitalist experience is preferred.
  • An Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
  • Master's-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant, as applicable, is preferred.
