Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited law school.
  • Eligibility for a Temporary Trial Card from the State Bar of Texas under House Bill 424 of the 64th Legislature, with the card obtained within 60 days of hire if unlicensed.
  • A license from the Texas State Bar to practice law in Texas, or eligibility for the Temporary Trial Card.
  • A current Texas Operator's License and a driving record meeting County and insurance carrier standards when driving on official business.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal law.
  • Knowledge of trial procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate facts, procedures, and legal precedents relevant to complex court cases.

Responsibilities
  • Perform case evaluation, preparation, and management.
  • Research case law and legal issues.
  • Draft and argue motions, responses, and briefs in court.
  • Conduct background investigations and interview witnesses, victims, and law enforcement officers where appropriate.
  • Represent clients in court for pretrial proceedings, evidentiary hearings, and jury or bench trials.
  • Communicate case evaluations and status to clients in an effective and timely manner.
  • Communicate with judges, court staff, prosecutors, family members, witnesses, and other interested parties.
  • Participate in training and continuing education regarding court decisions, laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Prioritize and organize work to meet filing deadlines and court appearances.
  • Collaborate with the public defender team and relevant service providers.
  • Supervise and delegate responsibilities to legal secretaries and investigators.
  • Maintain legal files and records and document case evaluation and activity.
  • Assign and review the work of paralegals, legal secretaries, and investigators.
  • Train employees, plan and direct work, and resolve problems in accordance with County policies and applicable laws.
