Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
- Applicants must meet all requirements set forth by the DUHS Career Ladder Program for level IV.
- Emergency Department experience is required.
- Must have current or compact registered nurse licensure in North Carolina.
- Basic Life Support certification is required.
- Knowledge of the scope of practice of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and unlicensed staff.
- Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process.
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice, and procedures.
- Ability to assess nursing needs of acutely and chronically ill patients and their families.
- Ability to independently seek resources and work collaboratively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team members, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
- Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care.
- Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow-up.
- Ability to use fine motor skills.
- Competence in Basic Life Support and other specialized life-support requirements designated by the work area.
- Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation, and re-evaluation of patient status.
- Ability to use computers and learn new software programs.
- Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer or paper documentation tools.
- Ability to navigate the entity to provide clinical care for patients.
- Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking.
- Ability to remain focused and organized.
- Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
- Working knowledge of infection-control procedures and safety precautions.
- Working knowledge and completion of The Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities
- Plan and provide advanced or specialized nursing care for patients in accordance with the Nursing Clinical Ladder Program and North Carolina Board of Nursing guidelines.
- Identify care needs for patient populations across the continuum of care.
- Collaborate and provide leadership in developing standards of care, patient and family education, and staff education for specific populations.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and provide leadership in delivering patient care.
- Provide leadership in educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, and other health-related projects.
- Evaluate, direct, and guide the selection, use, care, and control of material resources.
- Appraise the quality and effectiveness of materials and equipment and collaborate with appropriate departments on vendor selection and performance feedback.
- Guide the professional growth of others through role modeling, coaching, and mentoring.
- Design orientation modules and provide primary precepting for senior nursing students as needed.
- Provide leadership at departmental, entity, community, or regional/national levels for initiatives that improve quality of care and support the growth of others.
- Conduct performance reviews.
- Recommend personnel actions, including hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations, and related activities.
- Monitor clinical practice and ensure compliance with practice and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with unit or clinic leadership to coach and mentor nursing colleagues and influence staff recruitment and development.
- Plan and deliver in-house education sessions or collaborate with subject-matter experts.
- Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based nursing practices and adult education.
- Assess staff educational needs and partner with the clinical nurse educator and clinical nurse specialist to address unit educational needs.
- Serve as a superuser for clinical information systems.
- Disseminate information to staff regarding the adoption of or changes to technology.
- Facilitate service tickets and troubleshoot efficiency concerns with staff.
- Provide training and technology education support on the unit.
- Serve as a change agent and facilitate adoption of new technology on the unit.
- Collaborate with subject-matter experts to analyze patient-care data, identify trends, and identify areas for improvement.
- Participate in multidisciplinary committees focused on quality and patient safety.
- Provide guidance and support to nursing staff in quality assurance and best practices.
- Engage in research and innovation initiatives to develop methodologies and technologies that enhance patient care.
- Lead change by seeking creative solutions to improve quality and efficiency in patient-care delivery.
