Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Act as a receptionist for the patient unit, answer telephone and switchboard calls, relay messages, make announcements, and direct calls to the proper extension or department.
  • Assist with maintaining nursing records and perform clerical duties under the direction and supervision of the charge nurse.
  • Fill out requisitions and central scheduling communication checklists, and fax orders and patient lists to the appropriate departments and providers.
  • Check charts for stat and discharge orders, verify signatures and patient names, assemble admission charts, create new charts, update charts, and break down discharged-patient charts for Medical Records.
  • Enter temperatures, pulse, respirations, intake, output, weight, blood pressure, and observation information into HMS; report elevated vital signs to the charge nurse.
  • Post X-ray, laboratory, and other reports after review by the registered nurse.
  • Record patient admissions and discharges, dismiss patients from the computer system, transfer patients using the proper forms, and maintain accurate daily floor census.
  • Maintain patient lists, including floor lists, weight and vital-sign lists, vital-sign reports, detailed round reports, and reports for doctors’ offices, laboratories, Medical Records, and the Coumadin clinic.
  • Take off orders, keep charts current with progress notes and physicians’ orders, and prepare charts and documents for admissions and discharges.
  • Operate the telephone switchboard and nurse-station telephone after 4:30 p.m.; answer questions, take messages, page staff, and relay information to nurses.
  • Keep the nursing station organized and maintain adequate supplies of chart materials, requisitions, and forms; maintain the ward library and supply, utility, and nurse-station areas.
  • Answer inquiries from patients, visitors, and staff using tact and judgment, announce the end of visiting hours, and direct people to the appropriate department, room, or area.
  • Schedule appointments when ordered by a physician and maintain maintenance orders.
  • Monitor observation hours, enter and verify observation charges, and enter material charges.
  • Print detailed rounds and vital-sign reports before 8:00 a.m. each morning.
  • Make copies of nursing worksheets and complete them.
  • Assist nurses with clerical tasks and assist other departments with multiple tasks.
  • Report on and off duty to the nurse in charge and report when leaving or returning to the department.
  • Attend staff meetings and complete mandatory in-services, annual educational requirements, department training, and competency evaluations.
  • Follow organizational policies, maintain patient confidentiality, use time and materials economically, complete assignments within allotted time, and report suspected illegal or unethical conduct.
  • Maintain professional, courteous, and friendly interactions with patients, visitors, coworkers, and other departments.
