Amazon stock eyes $300 as AWS growth hits 18-quarter high despite $200B capex spend

Amazon's stock has lagged despite strong operational performance, with AWS posting 36.7% growth, its fastest in 18 quarters. The advertising business reached $19.8 billion quarterly revenue, growing 26%, while the chips unit hit a $25 billion annualized run rate. Shares trade at $251.89, up just 9.13% year to date, well below the 52-week high of $287.20. The stock trades at an 18x forward multiple, below its five-year average. Two factors weigh on sentiment: Amazon guided to roughly $200 billion in 2026 capital expenditure for AI infrastructure, whilst trailing free cash flow turned negative at $7.6 billion. Additionally, news of an inquiry into a fatal Miami plane crash involving Amazon operations pressured shares. Wall Street remains bullish, with a consensus target of $328.17 backed by 59 buy ratings and just 2 holds.

Peter Thiel's hedge fund makes Amazon largest holding with 28% of portfolio

Peter Thiel's hedge fund, Thiel Macro, made Amazon its largest investment in the second quarter, allocating 28% of its portfolio to the tech giant. This marked a notable shift for the fund, which held no stocks in the first quarter. The investment focuses on Amazon's artificial intelligence infrastructure through Amazon Web Services. AWS now accounts for 60% of Amazon's operating profits despite representing only 21% of revenue, demonstrating superior margins compared to the company's commerce business. AWS has shown accelerating growth, with its rate climbing to 37% from the low-20% range earlier in 2025. The company is investing hundreds of billions of pounds into AI data centres to meet unprecedented demand for computing power. Thiel Macro's remaining investments were concentrated in energy companies, reflecting a strategy focused on AI infrastructure and the power needed to support it.

Amazon poised for 60% returns after 7% monthly drop despite AWS growing 37% YoY

Amazon shares fell 7% last month despite Amazon Web Services growing 37% year-over-year, its fastest pace in 18 quarters. Loop Capital's Rob Sanderson maintains a street-high $405 price target, implying 61% upside from the current price near $252. The decline was driven by capital expenditure concerns. Second-quarter cash capex reached $53.1 billion, pushing trailing-twelve-month free cash flow to negative $7.6 billion. Management guided to roughly $200 billion in 2026 capex across AI data centres, custom silicon, robotics, and the Amazon Leo satellite network. Amazon's monthly drop outpaced peers Microsoft and Alphabet. The average Wall Street 12-month price target sits at $328, implying roughly 30% upside.

Amazon integrates shopping into Prime Video with X-Ray feature and visual search across 8,000 titles

Amazon has introduced new shopping features for Prime Video viewers. The retail giant is integrating product discovery across thousands of titles through its X-Ray experience, which currently displays actor information and soundtrack details. Users can now access a Shop tab by pausing video and pressing up on their Fire TV remote. A new "Shop the Scene" feature uses Amazon's Lens technology to identify products from characters' outfits and home décor. The updates enhance last year's "Shop the Show" feature, which required typing a search query. The improved second-screen experience now automatically opens relevant storefronts when users launch the Amazon Shopping app whilst watching content. "Shop the Scene" is available on iOS and Android across more than 600 titles, whilst "Shop the Show" has expanded from 1,300 to over 8,000 titles in the US.
