Gates Foundation is a philanthropic organization funding efforts to reduce poverty, disease, and inequity worldwide, working through grants to nonprofits, governments, and research institutions rather than delivering services directly. Its funding spans maternal and child health, infectious disease elimination including malaria, TB, HIV, and polio, smallholder farmer development, and women's economic empowerment, spread across thousands of active grants. What sets Gates Foundation apart is its selective, proactive grantmaking: staff invite organizations to submit proposals, run Grand Challenges competitions, and publish grant data and financials openly. The goal is to give every person, regardless of where they are born, the chance to live a healthy, productive life.

Swedish point-of-care diagnostics company Readily Diagnostics has received a €811,000 grant from the Gates Foundation to develop an affordable test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea and trichomoniasis. The funding will support early concept and feasibility work, including sample preparation, antimicrobial resistance detection and product development planning. Founded in 2022 as a spin-out from Uppsala University, Readily develops rapid diagnostic testing for infectious diseases. The company's platform uses padlock-probe technology to deliver molecular diagnostic results without central laboratories. The test will run directly on patient samples and is designed for primary care, family planning and HIV-prevention settings. It will also detect genetic markers of antibiotic resistance in gonorrhoea, helping clinicians choose appropriate treatments.
ProFound Therapeutics, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company, has secured up to $35 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to advance maternal healthcare research. The initial $20 million investment will support ProFound's ProFoundry™ platform, which focuses on discovering drug targets and biomarkers for preeclampsia and eclampsia. The platform uses advanced protein detection methods and AI-driven analysis to identify novel proteins in the placenta and serum of affected women. This approach aims to create diagnostic tools and personalised treatment options for these pregnancy-related conditions, which remain chronically underdiagnosed and undertreated. CEO John Lepore noted that therapeutic options for these devastating conditions are currently limited, and the expanded proteome represents an untapped resource for developing groundbreaking therapies.
