Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) certificate is required; relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.
  • The employee must work a maximum of 19 hours per week and a minimum of three days, including one weekend day, on nontraditional and rotating schedules.
  • The employee must work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and safely handle live animals, including animals that may be injured, frightened, or offensive.
  • The employee must frequently lift, push, or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds and perform bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, squatting, stooping, and grasping activities.
  • The employee must be able to operate a motor vehicle and meet the stated vision, hearing, and speaking requirements.
  • Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at the time of application or appointment.
  • The employee must receive the full series of pre-exposure rabies immunizations within nine months of appointment, with required boosters unless medically excused or unable to develop immunity.
  • The position requires a post-offer physical and/or drug screen and post-offer proof of immunization and/or tuberculosis screening.
  • The position requires a pre-employment background check, including verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
Responsibilities
  • Provide humane care and safe handling for dogs, cats, and small pets while monitoring behavior and health.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions and safely handle live animals using appropriate techniques to minimize risks to self and others.
  • Answer public and volunteer questions, address concerns, and guide decisions regarding intakes, outcomes, redemptions, and animal care in accordance with Pima Animal Care Center policies.
  • Handle animals for behavioral assessments and playgroups, identify placement or behavior concerns, and participate in outcome decisions, including euthanasia.
  • Organize and document animal behavior, history, medical records, and outcomes using shelter software and other systems for recordkeeping, communication, and scheduling.
  • Administer vaccinations and medications under veterinary guidance, assess animals for signs of illness or injury, and document and communicate health concerns.
  • Facilitate adoption and foster processes through enrichment, behavioral evaluations, animal meet-and-greets, matchmaking, and note reviews.
  • Support intake and admissions by providing correct intake pathways, checking animals for health concerns, identifying ages and breeds, and finding kennel placements.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary facility, including kennels, workspaces, public lobbies, and treatment spaces.
  • Safeguard and account for scheduled drugs and funds received for Pima Animal Care Center services.
  • Operate County-owned vehicles to transport animals and supplies.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bilingual English/Spanish ability.
  • At least one year of customer service experience.
  • At least one year of experience working in an animal shelter or other relevant animal care setting.
  • Experience working or volunteering with dogs and/or cats.
