Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- Bachelor's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant for the physician assistant pathway.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Proficiency with computers.
- The ability to perform heavy work requiring strength or stamina, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The ability to work protracted or irregular hours and in environments involving biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for HVI critical care patients and their families during inpatient intensive care and immediate post-transfer to stepdown, ward, or discharge.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with critical care faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge or transfer by coordinating appropriate follow-up services and tests.
- Develop individualized plans of care, including teaching, discharge or transfer planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Provide care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex critical care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate critical care patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collection of outcome measures.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to clinical decision-making and management of patient and family needs.
- Use patient-care equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain current clinical knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for critical care patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient's medical record according to approved policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in critical care practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to critical care patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret critical care data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist critical care faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
Desired Qualifications
- Critical care, cardiac, and/or acute care experience.
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioners are preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
- A Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant.
