Requirements
  • Hold a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or equivalent advanced degree and be a licensed Pharmacist.
  • Maintain current registration and any required licensure to comply with local, state, and federal drug laws and applicable state board of pharmacy and Drug Enforcement Administration regulations.
  • Have strong knowledge of specialty medication pharmacology, pharmacy regulations, process management, technical and clinical skills, legal compliance, productivity, quality, and attention to detail.
  • Be computer literate, with proficiency in Microsoft Office tools including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, internet navigation, web-based platforms, database applications, and reporting tools.
  • Identify barriers to medication adherence and implement and monitor plans to improve adherence.
  • Motivate and coach patients to help them achieve better outcomes and identify goals of therapy.
  • Maintain discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive and private data.
  • Be organized, dependable, empathetic, and a strong listener and communicator.
  • Obtain any additional required licensure within a mutually agreed-upon timeframe if necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Review and interpret clinician patient-care notes and assessments to identify clinical data needed for prior authorization approvals and care-plan recommendations.
  • Develop and refine disease- and drug-specific clinical protocols to maximize adherence and promote evidence-based, cost-effective care.
  • Monitor ongoing patient adherence using PDC reports, patient assessment data, and mobile-platform data across sites and disease categories, with emphasis on oncology and other specialty disease states.
  • Evaluate electronic medical records for drug and disease interactions, medication selection, laboratory results, vital signs, allergies, prescription orders and renewals, physician communication, and other information needed to optimize adherence and patient outcomes.
  • Recommend alternative therapeutic regimens and disease-specific treatments according to applicable guidelines.
  • Monitor therapies for side effects and medication-related issues, and recommend therapy changes to prescribers when appropriate.
  • Provide medication therapy management, including reviewing and monitoring medication regimens, advising clinicians on evidence-based therapy, documenting interventions, and assessing adherence rates.
  • Conduct clinical interventions including pharmacist consultations, motivational interviewing and coaching, drug-regimen optimization, medication reconciliation, medication lists or reminders, medication synchronization, coordination of home nurse visits, transitions between liaison and patient-support channels, and use of mobile applications or other technologies.
  • Monitor productivity and report weekly statistics for growth and development.
  • Oversee technicians' daily activities and verify delivery coordination slips, submitted prior authorizations, ongoing prior-authorization log activity, and proactive care-utilization management within each specialty according to protocol.
  • Identify and resolve insurance-related issues and recognize situations where financial assistance can be applied.
  • Supervise support-personnel communications in compliance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act rules and regulations.
  • Communicate directly with other health professionals regarding patient care as necessary.
  • Train pharmacy staff, students, interns, externs, and healthcare professionals.
  • Manage, organize, and update relevant data using database applications.
  • Apply observations and recommendations to operational issues, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards.
  • Assist with research projects and peer-review articles as needed.
  • Identify trends, resolve problems, recommend improvements, implement changes, and participate in process-improvement initiatives.
  • Protect organizational information by maintaining confidentiality.
  • Maintain job knowledge through educational opportunities, professional publications, personal networks, and professional organizations.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of EPIC, QS1, and WILLOW software is a plus.
  • Knowledge of complex and chronic disease states and specialty-pharmacy therapies, including oncology, transplant, hepatitis C, infectious disease including HIV, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, gastrointestinal disorders including inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis, psoriasis, hyperlipidemia, and inflammatory conditions including lupus.

Cigna's Evernorth invests $3.5B in Shields

Cigna's unit, Evernorth Health, will invest $3.5 billion in Shields Health to enhance its specialty pharmacy business. This investment follows Shields' transition to a private company after Sycamore Partners acquired its former parent, Walgreens Boots Alliance, for $10 billion. Evernorth, which operates Accredo, aims to meet the growing demand for specialty medications. The investment is in preferred stock and won't impact Cigna's 2025 profit forecast.
