Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing as a registered nurse.
  • Hold current appropriate state licensure.
  • Successfully complete a training course in the theory and practice of dialysis therapies.
  • Be competent at operating all home therapies-related equipment.
  • Successfully complete CPR certification and maintain it as required.
  • Complete ICD-9 coding training.
  • Demonstrate teaching abilities.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective training and oversight of home dialysis therapies for patients in compliance with facility policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Rotate with other licensed staff to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Participate in staff training and orientation of new staff as assigned.
  • Participate in required staff meetings.
  • Provide quality patient care in accordance with company quality goals and standards.
  • Submit continuous quality improvement information to the Clinical Manager for inclusion in the facility CQI packet.
  • Participate in monthly continuous quality improvement meetings.
  • Assist in identifying and evaluating candidates for the Home Therapies Program, including assessing patients’ home environments.
  • Train home patients and their families or significant others in the safe and effective operation and maintenance of home therapies equipment through the formal Home Therapies training program.
  • Educate patients and families about end-stage renal disease and the Kidney Options Program.
  • Assess patient and family readiness and ability to perform dialysis treatments at home, as well as the suitability of the home environment for ongoing home dialysis therapy.
  • Provide ongoing education about renal dialysis, peritoneal or vascular access, home dialysis therapy, and related health conditions.
  • Provide safe and effective home therapy support care to patients with end-stage renal disease.
  • Assess patients’ responses to home dialysis treatment by following predetermined protocols.
  • Communicate patient-related issues to the physician as needed.
  • Report adverse patient events and equipment or technology problems to Clinical/Home Therapies management and the physician, including accurate documentation.
  • Coordinate patient transfers to the hemodialysis clinic when needed and appropriate.
  • Review, transcribe, and accurately enter physician laboratory orders into the Medical Information System.
  • Follow company policies and government regulations for collecting, packaging, and delivering laboratory specimens and reporting results.
  • Maintain competency in emergency procedures and initiate CPR and emergency measures during cardiac or respiratory arrest in the medical office.
  • Administer medications as prescribed, follow applicable algorithms, document medical justification when indicated, and maintain controlled-substance records as required by law.
  • Maintain proficiency in operating home dialysis therapy equipment and troubleshoot equipment problems with patients by telephone.
  • Direct patients in preventive maintenance of home therapies equipment, including water systems and analyses as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with the products division on delivery, operation, and maintenance of home therapy dialysis equipment.
  • Admit new patients and complete required documentation.
  • Document physician orders, laboratory results, vital signs, treatment parameters, patient status, and treatment-related data in the Medical Information System.
  • Implement company policies for patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Complete required monthly and annual reports in accordance with company policies and government regulations.

  • Intensive care unit experience.
  • At least one year of dialysis experience.
  • Peritoneal dialysis experience.
