InterDigital develops wireless and video technologies and builds a large portfolio of patents. It invents new technologies, patents them, and licenses the intellectual property to mobile device makers, networks, and services providers. Its products work by providing foundational technologies that enable devices and networks to communicate and deliver video services, and its revenue comes from licensing those patents rather than selling hardware. What sets InterDigital apart is its extensive patent portfolio (tens of thousands of patents and applications), its focus on contributing technologies to global standards, and its licensing-based business model that monetizes R&D. The company operates worldwide with major manufacturers and technology companies as clients, aiming to influence the telecommunications ecosystem through standards participation. The goal is to enable connected and immersive experiences by developing and licensing foundational wireless and video technologies.

At 6G@UT Forum, InterDigital to demonstrate AI-enabled teleoperation and energy efficient edge intelligence.

At 6G@UT Forum, InterDigital to demonstrate AI-enabled teleoperation and energy efficient edge intelligence. WILMINGTON, Del., April 06, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC), a wireless, video and AI technology research and development company, will demonstrate new milestones in AI-enhanced services and energy efficient edge intelligence at the fifth annual 6G@UT Forum, taking place at The University of Texas at Austin. Managing the overhead of AI model training is a key challenge to applying AI throughout the wireless network. InterDigital is a founding member of the 6G@UT Research Center and has partnered with researchers from The University of Texas at Austin and Keysight Technologies on real-time Over-the-Air Federated Learning (OTA-FL) training, where the aggregation of model updates happens directly "over-the-air." At the forum, InterDigital will conduct a live hardware demonstration of multi-user multiple input multiple output (MIMO) OTA-FL, which uses less spectrum resources and delivers more energy-efficient AI training at the edge device. InterDigital will also showcase innovation supporting AI-enabled teleoperation, where predictive AI agents stabilize real-time uplink video over cellular networks and a GenAI assistant enhances human judgment for safer remote vehicle operation, despite degraded network conditions. The innovation demonstrates how wireless and AI capabilities can converge to foster intelligent infrastructure for new services. As part of the forum, InterDigital's Head of Wireless Research Douglas Castor will participate in the panel, "6G: What's in, What's Out, and Why?," alongside peers from Ericsson, Nokia, Communications Technology Laboratory, and TU Dresden. Doug will share InterDigital's perspective on the research, standards, and pre-standards efforts shaping 6G. The forum will take place on Thursday, April 9th at The University of Texas at Austin, Mulva Auditorium. Learn more here. InterDigital secures expanded Sony patent licensing deal covering cellular, WiFi, and video tech

InterDigital has announced an expanded patent licensing agreement with Sony covering all of Sony's end-user devices under its global portfolio of standard essential cellular, WiFi and video patents. The deal strengthens InterDigital's recurring revenue base across major consumer electronics brands. The company is also conducting a 6G sensing trial with Türk Telekom, highlighting its work on emerging technologies that could generate future licensing opportunities. However, investors face uncertainty around regulatory scrutiny of patent licensing models and FRAND terms. InterDigital's narrative forecasts $633.9 million revenue by 2028, implying a 10.8% annual decline, with earnings decreasing to $173.4 million from $463.5 million currently. Some analysts project more conservative revenue of $725.1 million by 2028. The expanded Sony deal may help offset these pessimistic assumptions, though regulatory concerns remain.

Shannon River slashes InterDigital stake by 75%, selling $44.3M in shares

Shannon River Fund Management has sold 125,230 shares of InterDigital, worth an estimated $44.3 million, according to a SEC filing dated 13 February. The sale reduced the fund's position in the wireless technology company from 9.9% to 2.67% of assets under management. InterDigital shares have surged 397% over three years, with the stock priced at $375.01 as of 13 February, up 76.2% year-on-year. The sale likely represents profit-taking following this strong performance. Whilst InterDigital reported near-record revenue and earnings with bullish 2026 guidance, its price-to-earnings multiple has reached 30x, nearly double its three-year average of 17x, raising valuation concerns. The company generates revenue by licensing its wireless and video technology patents to manufacturers globally.
