Requirements
- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and successful completion of an accredited program for Licensed Practical Nursing are required.
- Experience in a health care delivery setting is preferred.
- Must be a Licensed Practical Nurse in good standing with the State of Michigan.
- Must obtain Basic Life Support certification by the end of the core orientation period.
- Must demonstrate the clinical competencies required to perform Licensed Practical Nurse functions within an approximately three-month general orientation period.
- Must be able to move and respond quickly to emergency situations.
- Must be able to input and retrieve data from computerized systems.
- Must be able to rotate within the service line and related service areas.
- Must communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and all members of the care delivery team.
- Must be able to perform work involving considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of objects weighing 20 pounds or less, and assisting with lifting and moving patients.
- Must be able to perform duties requiring sustained hand-eye coordination and assume physically fatiguing positions and motions.
Responsibilities
- Provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services within the scope of practical nursing under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
- Assist the Registered Nurse in collecting data, accompanying patients, and responding to patient and family requests for services.
- Admit patients to the emergency department and complete preparation tasks.
- Coordinate with the charge nurse when patient needs exceed the Licensed Practical Nurse's scope of practice or when census and acuity are high.
- Document data gathered, care provided, and interventions implemented by the healthcare team.
- Communicate patient status to the physician and Registered Nurse.
- Maintain patient flow through the area.
- Implement skilled technical care and appropriate protocols within the limits of the Licensed Practical Nurse license and applicable guidelines.
- Respond to call lights and monitor alarms and provide assistance to patients and families.
- Collect and record patient data, including intake and output, weight, vital signs, calorie counts, and demographic information.
- Manage intravenous fluids and medication administration and document medications administered.
- Observe patients and report adverse reactions to medication or treatment to the responsible medical personnel.
- Dress wounds; administer enemas, douches, alcohol rubs, and massages; apply compresses, ice bags, and hot water bottles; and bathe, dress, reposition, and assist patients with ambulation.
- Collect urine, blood, sputum, and other patient samples for testing.
- Prepare or examine food trays for prescribed diets and feed patients.
- Wash and dress deceased persons.
- Assist with the delivery, care, and feeding of infants.
- Assemble and use equipment such as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen supplies.
- Sterilize equipment and supplies.
- Inventory and requisition supplies.
- Use computerized systems to obtain supplies and enter patient data.
- Maintain a clean and orderly environment.
- Provide patient teaching materials based on identified needs and document the education provided.
- Complete the discharge process and assist patients with appointments for further care and follow-up.
- Participate effectively as a member of the healthcare team.
- Develop and pursue annual professional goals and objectives.
- Fulfill organizational obligations professionally.
- Precept new employees and students in the unit.
- Communicate patient status, completed interventions, collected data, and pertinent information to the Registered Nurse to facilitate care planning.
